Express: Reds want Barca stopper

Liverpool are set to bring Barcelona stopper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to Anfield on loan this month.

The German keeper moved to the Camp Nou from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer and is seen as the long-term successor to Victor Valdes – now at Manchester United – at the Catalan club.

But the 22-year-old has struggevealed how his time as a player at Old Trafford was brought to an end.Phelan signed for the Old Trafford outfit from Norwich City in 1989 but his career with the club came to a frustrating end five years later. “He came up to me the Friday before thled to displace Claudio Bravo between the sticks at his new club and has openly talked about his dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time.

Earlier this week, Ter Stegen said: “For now, the manager counts on me for the Cup and Champions League, but I’d like to play in the league.

“I want La Liga, even if Bravo is doing a good job.”

Brendan Rodgers ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. The Premier League has been sle winner Chris Sutton has taken aim at Newcastle United fans.Sutton believes Toon fans will be having regrets over the way they treated manager Steve Bruce earlier this season.Speaking on BBC 5 Live, he said: “It was always going to be easier to juspended until April 4 after Blues winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta both tested positive to coronavirus last week.Given players shared a dressing room with Hudson-Odoi,wants to bring in another keeper to provide competition for Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones on Merseyside.

And while Barca won’t countenance a permanent departure for Ter Stegen, reports in SCadepain suggest Liverpool are hopeful that the the Catalan outfit might be amenable to a short term deal.

Ter Stegen still features regularly for Luis Enrique in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey and it remains to be seen whether Barca are genuinely willing to consider letting the German international leave before the end of the transfer window.

Gerrard: Plenty to do in top four race

With 10 games remaining of the Barclays Premier League season, the Reds trail a top-foero was key to his move to the Nou Camp. The former Boca Juniors defender signed for Barca last month in a move which hasAdrian left the Irons for the Reds earlier this month. “Today is the sixth anniversary of my arrival in London to proudly defend the Hammers shirt, a fortunate and happy time that has helped me grow as a person and also a footballer,” he wrote in a h angered the Argentine giants.Ramos Mingo recalled to Mundo Deportivo: “We were playing against San Lorenzo. In fact, it all startur position by just two points, while third-place Arsenal are only one further ahead in a congested table.

Having coolly scored from the penalty spot in a pivotal 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield last month, the captain suffered a hamstring problem in the game that has restricted him to the sidelines since.

Three consecutive league victories have been chalked up in the interim, with Brendan Rodgers’ team overcoming close rivals Southampton and Manchester City, plus Burnley, to record 12 Premier League matches unbeaten.

The skipper, who is expected to be in contention for the trip to Swansea City on Monday night, believes they’ll need more of the same throughout the run-in if elite European football is to be played at Anfield in 2015-16.

He wrote in his most recent programme notes: “Winning our last four league games has certainly improved our chances of finishing in the top four.

“At the same time we know our recent good run has guaranteed absolutely nothing.

“After our up-and-down start to the season, all it’s done is get us in contention for a Champions League spot. Plenty of other teams are fighting for the same objective.

“None of them are going to make it easy for us, so we have to keepGabrielle picking up points. There are still a lot of games to be played and we haven’t achieved anything yet.

“In recent weeks the manager has had to utilise all of the squad and each player who has got on the pitch has taken their chnchester City boss Pep Guardiola admits that he misses some aspects of managing Barcelona. The Catalan boss has not looked back since leaving his boyhood club, managing Bayern Munich and Manchester City since. But in an interview on Post United, Guardiance by performing well.

“I’ve said previously that choosing the starting XI should never be an easy task for the boss and when everyone is available that will certainly be the case.”

Gerrard: Keep faith in our character

The Reds saw a run of eight consecutive victories halted at Anfield, as Brendan Rodgers’ side fell behind to two first-half strikes before levelling the game at 2-2.

Gerrard kept his calm to slot from the penalty spot in the 51st minute after Daniel Sturridge clipped over Brad Guzan moFabiments before half-time.

Reflecting on the match, the skipper told “I think after going 2-0 down, we showed good fight and good character to get back into it.

“We’re happy we didn’t lose the game, but I think we’ll see it as two points dropped because of the form we have been in at home. If we had played anywhere near that [level], we would beat Aston Villa. But it didn’t pan out like that.

“We’ve played so well this season. I think the fans expect us to steamroll most teams here. Sometimes sides come and have a good day and we are a little bit off it and we get punished like we did in the first half.

“But I think the character and the fight we showed, that’s the message the fans need to believe in going forward.”

On playing in the deeper role in front of the back four for much of the game, Gerrard said: “I think because of the change, I expect people to talk about it.

“I’ve played attacking midfield for more than 10 years, so for me to drop back and become more of a controlling player, people are naturally going to talk about it.

“It didn’t work today. I hope that doesn’t mean it won’t work moving forward in future fixtures. We’ll have to wait and see what the manager decides to do.”

Villa broke the deadlock in the match after 25 minutes when Christian Benteke released Gabriel Agbonlahor, who sped clear of the Liverpool defence before squaring low for Andreas Weimann to tap home.

The Reds were unlocked again 10 minutes later when Agbonlahor centred from the opposite flank and Benteke gratefullding the loan availability of Wilson, says DerbyshireLive. The Welsh international, who was Derby’s top scorer last term, is highly-rated by the club and they would like to be considered if the 22-year-old is to be loaned out.It remains to be seen whey nodded home into an empty net after Simon Mignolet failed to claim the cross.

“Sometimes you’ve got to give opposition teams credit,” said Gerrard. “They started very well, they had a lot of bodies in the opposition half of the pitch and they swamped us.

“We found it very difficult to get the game under control. I, personally, struggled in there for 45 minutes.

“It wasn’t until by the end of the night. The ability is there. Even the experience. But after Sunday at Old Trafford, it’s the mental strength of this team – as a unit – which is up for debate.Yesterday, ahead of the Super Cup against Liverpool, Frank Lampard was pBrendan changed the formation and went to three at the back with wing-backs and the extra body in the midfield, that we gotboss Chris Wilder is ready to send Ravel Morrison away on-loan.The Sun says the ex-Manchester United babe has been at the club for months but is yet to crack the first-team squad.Morrison, 26, could be loaned out or even released, with several Champi control. Mignolet: Suarez doesn’t surprise me

The Uruguayan fired an early effort at Carrow Road in a 3-2 victory over Norwich City, ensuring he became the first Red since Ian Rush in 1986-87 to secure ts signed for Brazil’s Sao Paulo after his contract at the Spanish side ended this summer. The 34-year-old right-back made 355 appearances and won seven trophies in eight years for the club.He is Sao Paulo’s second free transfer in as many days followihe milestone.

It’s feat described as ‘amazing’ by Mignolet, though the goalkeeper insists it hasn’t come as a shock to him.

“To score 30 league goals in a season is amazing,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“Everybody knows what Luis can do and the goals he contributes to the team are very important for us.

“He doesn’t surprise me anymore. I see him every day in training.

“It’s not an accident, it’s not luck, the reason he has scored so many goals is down to his ability. He is so good and we’re very pleased to have him.”

Suarez is one of three Liverpool players in contention to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award this Sunday, alonCadeg with Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge.

However, while there have been a number of outstanding individual performances among the Reds squad this season on their march to the Barclays Premier League summit, Mignolet feels it’s a strong team ethic that has been key to their form.

“Luis has a good chance but there are a few contenders for that award in our team,” added the Belgian.

“Thefers from across Europe. The youngster failed to break through to the first-team at City before his contract expired earlier this week.Alaves are keen to make a move, reports the Mirror. And Zulte Waregem have already made an offer. Fellow City departre are other players here who are also very important for the team.

“It’s more about the squad than any individual. You saw the toge he’s striving to improve every day at Wolves. The Spaniard earned praise from Wolves boss Nuno after coming on as a right wing-back in Monday’s draw with Manchester United.Speaking after the game, Traore said: “We’ve been working on a new position fotherness in the scenes after the win over Manchester City and again at Norwich.

“We’ve cleared different hurdles together as a team. Every game is mentally and physically tough but we get through it and it makes you stronger.”

Liverpool’s victory on Sunday moved them five points clear at the top of the table with three games remaining.

Next up for Brendan Rodgers’ side is an Anfield encounter with Chelsea this weekend – but Mignolet is adamant a sense of calmness prevails within the Melwood dressing room.

He said: “There are no signs of nerves. There is no point making ourselves nervous before a match.

“We take each game as it comes and just focus on the objective. All we can do is our best.

“It’s not about imagining winning the title, it’s about doing it on the pitch. No-one is thinking about what might happen on May 11, we’re just preparing ourselves for Chelsea.

“We know it’s up to us. We need to look at ourselves, it’s not about looking at the opposition.

“Three points was all that mattered at Norwich. Before the game the manager told us that Chelsea’s defeat [against Sunderland] was a warning sign – that it showed what can happen in the Premier League against any team.

“We’ve seen with the points Chelsea and City have dropped recently that every single game in this league is tough.

“Norwich are fighting relegation and made it difficult for us but we managed to get through it. We did the job and now we move on and look forward to another big game at home against Chelsea.

“We are an attacking team and to have scored 96 goals in the league already is a brilliant amount. Hopefully we can keep that going over the final three matches and finish the season strongly.”
