Vitality, the club’s official wellness partner, hosted the occasion at the historic trophy room at the Reds’ first team stadium, as manager Matt Beard and his charges were recognised for another landmark campaign.

Women’s football has rarely, if ever, witnessed a more dramatic day than that last month when the Ladies jumped from third to first and retained their championship in scarcely believable circumstances.

At the ceremony, Fara Williams collected two prizes, being named Manager’s Player of the Year and receiving a special recognition award from chief executive officer Ayre following her record-breaking 130th cap for England.

American goalkeeper Libby Stout was picked as the Players’ Player of the Year, Katie Zelem scooped Young Player of the Year and defender Becky Easton was crowned the Supporters’ Player of the Year following a poll on the Ladies’ official Facebook page.

Lucy Bronze, meanwhile, was voted the first ever winner of the Vitality Player of the Season, an honour that takes into consideration an individual’s high fitness levels, staying active inside and outside football, plus maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

She said: “It is a real honour for me to be the first winner of the Vitality Player of the Seasongham Forest. The Nottingham Post says Colback has been on loan at Nottingham Forest this season where he has appeared 38 times, scoring three goals and creating two. ‘How our goalkeepers learn from Suarez’

content_img

According to John Achterberg, the Uruguayan is as relentless and innovative in training as he is in matches.

Suarez set pulses racing at Anfield mid-week to etch his name into the history books with a four-goal haul against Norwich in the Reds’ 5-1 rout.

Goalkeeping coach Achterberg explained that by recreating his deadly finishing in coaching sessions, the No.7 is able to help the likes of Simon Mignolet hone his shot-stopping abilities out on the training field.

“Luis is the same in training as he is in matches – he’s lively,” Achterberg told Liverpoolfc.com. “It helps our ‘keepers to be focused and to try and find a remedy for the actions he produces.

“This will help them when we play bigger teams, who have quality players. So it’s good for them.

“There are not many performances like the one against Norwich that I’ve seen. You have to think far back, but he was from a different planet and everything he touched was a danger and he scored some magical goals.

“I liked the first one because that one gave us an advantage in the game and made it easier for us to play. If you get the first one, then things open up most of the time and you get more chancin this week.Arsenaer Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Jonas Lossl has signed with Everton. The Dane left the Terriers at the end of the season following their relegation to the Championship.Lossl, 30, has now signed a three-year deal to stay in the Premier League at Goodisl are now 10th in the Premier League — just five points above the relegation places and 10 off Chelsea in fourth. The match was interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg’s first game in charge at the Emirates Stadium and he saw his tees to get a second and a third.

“The free-kick and the third goal, when he took a touch over the player and fired it in, was quality as well. You won’t see many better goals.”

While Achterberg was able to marvel at Suarez’s brilliance and the repertoire of his strikes, we wanted to know if he had any tips for opposition ‘keepers – and could John Ruddy have prepared any better for the striker’s sensational 40-yard lob?

“No,” said Achterberg. “The only thing you can say to your ‘keepers is that if there is a bouncing ball, you obviously have to be deep in the goal, because if you are standing a few yards in front, it can loop over you.

“So, you have to be as deep as you can so you can move your feet. Obviously that didn’t happen for Ruddy but it was good for us!”

While Achterberg was delighted the Reds took the opportunity to hit back immediately following their sobering 3-1 defeat against Hull at the weekend, there was one low-point on an otherwise inspiring evening.

Bradley Johnson’s header, seven minutes from time, denied Simon Mignolet a fourth Anfield clean-sheet this season – and Achterberg admitted it was a frustrating goal to concede.

“We were very disappointed,” said the 42-year-old. “It was disappointing for the whole team, because we wanted to keep a clean-sheet and build on that for the next game.

“At the moment, it seems to be one defensive error from the team and then we concede a goal. So we just have to try and keep focused and remain switched on to anything to stop that happening. That will help us to get better results, because you’re not always scoring four or five goals. You might need to win the game 1-0.

“That’s something for the whole team to try and improve on because the defending starts at the front.”

Prior to the 5-1 win over the Canaries, Liverpool had conceded three goals in consecutive away games, at Everton and Hull.

While Achterberg insists that Mignolet was clearly deflated at conceding six in two, there was not a great deal more the Belgian could have done to prevent the goals from flooding in.

“We analysed the games to see if there was anything which we could have done better,” he explained. “In Simon’s case, there was not a lot he could have done.

“There are one or two technical details which he can improve on, but there wasn’t a lot that he could have done differently. But it is frustrating for a goalkeeper to concede three goals.

“The boss had a good chat with the players before the Hull game about what to expect and what we had to think about and then it didn’t come off in the game. So it was an off day for most of the team. But then you have to step up and try and get everyone back on track.”

“I think we’ve been improving a lot at Anfield over the last few years,” reflected Achterberg. “We had been struggling with teams who come and defend. There’s no guarantee that it will be different on Saturday, but we seem to be breaking teams down with the quality we have.

“If we play at the right tempo, then we will get the chances. Over the last year or so, we’ve been putting the chances away against those types of teams. So hopefully we can continue that.”

Gerrard: Why I owe Gary Mac a lot

content_img

There will be no late derby winners or famous European goals this time around, with the Scot now focused on making an impact at Melwood rather than Anfield.

But McAllister already has form for improving players at the Reds’ training ground, according to one former colleague.

Steven Gerrard was a fresh-faced 20-year-old fighting for a place in the first team when Gary joined the club from Coventry City in the summer of 2000.

And he has revealed just how much he learned from the former Scotland midfielder after overcoming the fear that he was set to take his starting berth.

Gerrard recalled: “I was devastated to be honest. I was thinking he’s going to come and take my place and I wasn’t going to play so my initial reaction was another top international midfielder to fight with.

“At the time I was trying to move Paul Ince and Jamie Redknapp out the way to establish myself and then (Gerard) Houllier went and bought Gary McAllister who was on the same level as the two I was trying to move.

“So it made my job an awfe he wants to leave the club this summer after returning from the African Cup of Nations.Arsenal are keen on the talented winger, despite dealing with a small transfer budget this summer. But Palace boss Roy Hodgson revealed last week that the Gunnersul lot harder but when I first met him and trained with him my reaction changed because I knew he was going to help me an awful lot.

“I knew there was a player there that I could l League clubs are queuing for PSG fullback Layvin Kurzawa ahead of the January market.Foot Mercato says West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are all in negotiations with Kurzawa’s agents. The 27 year-old’s current deal expires in Jearn off both on and off the pitch. He took a shine to me and helped me a lot to progress as a footballer on the pitch but also how to be humble and be a decent person off it.

“So I owe Gary Mac an awful lot.”

Despite McAllister only spending two years with the Reds in his first stint, he is considered a legendary figure in the club’s history for his role in the treble-winning 2000-01 campaign.

Gerrard admits he did not anticipate just how big an impression Gary would make, but believes the midfielder’s professional approach was the key to his success.

“Well I don’t think anyone at the time thought he was going to have the influence and didn’t think he was going to contribute as much as he did,” he said.

“Maybe even him himself didn’t realise it was going to go so well – it was like a dream for him.

“Everything he touched sort of turned to gold in the short time that he was here.

“But that was a credit to how well he looked after himself, how hsists the top four remains their target, being still only six points behind Chelsea but just one point ahead of Sheffield United in eighth.”I think that is still obviously up for grabs,” James told MUTV.”We have got to keep fighting, and I think tomoard he trained and the sacrifices he made while he was here – I thought he was fantastic.”

In fact, the former skipper’s only regret is that Liverpool did not move for McAllister earlier in his career.

“I think the fans opinion on it is the same as mine, Tabithathat Liverpool were probably eight-ten years too late buying him,” he continued.

“I think if we’d have bought Gary at a young age when he was shining at Leeds, we’d of had a top player here for ten years rather than a couple.

“But it wasn’t to be, but Gary McAllister was a Liverpool player for sure.

“He was a top footballer who could pass and move. He had great vision, a lovely touch and as I say to you, all the top midfielders are one or two steps ahead of most on the pitch.

“You look at Scholes, Lampard – those type of players – and Gary’s in that mould where he was very clever.”

Lallana on fitness, form and privilege

content_img

Having progressed through the much-vaunted academy in place at Southampton, the creative Englishman is no stranger to sharing a pitch with teammates possessing serious ability.

Gareth Bale, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott were three of the players he combined with for his previous employers, before swelling Brendan Rodgers’ talented ranks at Anfield.

Now he’s training daily with a raft of full internationals, winners of major trophies and many of the team that so narrowly missed out on the Barclays Premier League title in 2013-14.

Two who share a similar position to Lallana – Coutinho and Sterling – have particularly caught his eye, and the No.20 expects the link-up between the boss’ flair stars to improve with time.

“The more we train together the more we learn each other’s games,” was Lallana’s assessment when he recently spoke to the official Liverpool FC magazine.

“I can only see the relationship on the field going in one direction. It’s a privilege to be on the same pitch with them because there’s some unbelievable talent there.”

[SLIDESHOW]

The 26-year-old has made 12 appearances for the Reds and notched one goal to date, rediscovering full match fitness after picking up a frustrating knee injury in pre-season.

“I always knew it was going to be difficult settling in, especially with the injury,” he continued. “Playing for a new club the size of Liverpool and having Champions League football – you need to be tough mentally.

Rodgers: I’ve seen good signs already

content_img

The manager oversaw his side’s first pre-season friendly of the summer on Wednesday evening, a 2-1 defeat by Brondby, in which all 23 players selected in the squad were involved for some part.

Arriving on the back of eight days’ training at Melwood to kick off preparations, the journey to Denmark commenced a busy period ahead of a clash with Preston North End on Saturday and the beginning of the Reds’ American tour.

Early stages it may be, but Rodgers reflected afterwards on his pleasure with what the squad has produced since returning to the club’s base last Monday with hard work firmly on the menu.

“We’ll go and do our best,” the boss responded when asked about August’s season start, his third at the helm. “Our best last year nearly won us the title.

“This year, we know it’s going to be extremely competitive. Every team will strengthen and we’ll be exactly the same. But the beauty for us is that we’re a young group and we’re bringing in young players that are hungry.

“We will progress again from last season. It’s going to be a really exciting season. I’ve seen development in the players already in the short period of time that we’ve been back. This season we have the belief to go along with the quality.

“We want to improve and continually improve. We’re working very hard behind the scenes, as we always do, in terms of getting the best quality players into the club.

“It’s looking at the playere is attracting surprise interest from Brazil. The Argentina international believes Roma fans are seeing his best form this season. However, Ole says Internacional are planning to move for Pastore should Eduardo Coudet take charge.Coudet is favourite rs that can come in and add the goals and add to our game. That’s something that we will always look to continue to do at the club.”

In many ways, Daniel Agger took centre stage at the Brondby Stadion, returning to the home of his former club with his current employers as skipper and naturally receiving a rapturous reception.

Local journalists gathered at Rodgers’ post-match press conference were keen to hear the Northern Irishman’s thoughts on the Denmark international and Liverpool vice-captain.

He said: “Daniel is one of a number of excellent players that we have playing at the back. He has been unfortunate in the time that I’ve been at the club because t jokes about the deadly coronavirus. Alli is seen wearing a facemask at the airport before heading off on holiday for the winter break. The video filmed by Alli then faces an unsuspecting Asian man, with the England international then remarking: “Thhelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta admits the team are some way from being in the right form to achieve a top four position. The Blues have been struggling at home all season, but they have remained in fourth thanks to the failings of the teams around themihe big issue for Dan has been his availability.

“He has been out injured for a number of games – some of that has just been unfortunate. He’s an excellent player, an international captain and he’s had a very good career at Liverpool.

“He’s at a good age, 29, and his experience can be good for us this season. He signed a new contract last season. He has just been unfortunate with injuries.

“You saw tonight in the first half that he’s an excellent player, a very good footballer and someone that is an important member of our squad.”

Kristoffer Peterson was the goalscorer for the Reds three minutes into the second half against Brondby, but the equaliser was crafted almost totally by the talents of Jordon Ibe.

The 18-year-old scampered gloriously along the left wing, darted into the opposition penalty box and picked out his young teammate to provide a close-range finish.

“It’s going to be interesting for me to look at his development over pre-season,” Rodgers added. “You saw tonight that he’s a really exciting young player. He’s still only 18 years of age.

“He had a wonderful piece of skill and run for the goal, a good assist. That’s something that we’re looking to improve in Jordon – to score more goals and assists.

“He’s disappointed with his first touch when he was through on goal. He’s an exciting talent who is very good in the one-v-one and works very hard at his game.

“We give him time; I don’t necessarily need young players to be ready at 17 or 18, but certainly by 20 or 21, we want them to be ready.

“He’s a different type of player [to Raheem Sterling], but certainly both plCadeayers like to beat people and commit defenders. They are very aggressive with the ball. It’s just looking at the next stage of his development so hopefully he can consistently do that.”

Liverpool are one of 32 teams to have qualified for this stage of the Champions League, with all participating sides to be seeded into four separate pots based on their UEFA coefficient.

One club from each pot will be drawn into every pool, making up eight sections for the group stage, which gets underway in mid-September – and the Reds have been placed in pot three.

Brendan Rodgers’ charges cannot be paired with a rival from the Barclays Premier League, ruling out ties against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, but a number of mouthwatering encounters could be set up.

Potential opponents from pot one, for example, include heavyweights such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich, plus both of last season’s finalists – Atletico Madrid and reigning champions Real Madrid.

German international Corina Schroder then made it 2-0 on 19 minutes after a fantastic team move. Dowie’s unselfish running found Davison. The No.10 dribbled past two defenders before firing a low cross to the back post for Schroder to net.

A minute later it was almost 3-0 when Dowie’s superb effort was brilliantly saved by Alderson, but the No.9 wasn’t to be denied and from the resulting corner she glanced the ball home.

Dowie was at it again on 25 minutes when she turned and fired a stunning drive into the net to make it 4-0.

Rodgers: That was a warning sign for us

Fresh from suffering a 3-2 defeat by the Reds on Sunday, close rivals Manchester City were held to a surprising 2-2 draw by basement-dwellers Sunderland, who actually led with a matter of minutes left.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Stanley Park, Everton’s impressive winning streak was brought to a shuddering halt as Roberto Martinez’s side were overturned on home soil by Crystal Palace.

Therefore, as Rodgers’ team prepare to take their 15-match unbeaten record to Norwich City – currently 17th in the division – the manager had a simple message to his players on Thursday morning.

He commented yesterday: “I sal tally from last season.Already with four to his name, Abraham is hopeful he can come close to reaching the 26 he scored on loan at Aston Villa last season.”I always say to myself, you know, I want to hit close to what I got last season in terms of id to the players before we started training this morning that if there was doubt about our rivals droppitroversial striker proved is career with Barcelona.Messi, speaking on RAC1, insists he and his family are happy and settled in the city.He explained: “My idea has always been to stay here, it has always been the case and it has not changed. “An extension? I think not, I do nothe matchwinner for victory over SPAL on Sunday.“We really had to suffer for this, but it’s about time we got a win,” SuperMario told DAZN.“We’d tried and come close in even tougher matches than this, but were not lucky.ng points, then they should also take last night’s results as a warning sign.

“It was a warning sign for everyone that, at this point of the season with four games to go, there is nothing guaranteed and I have said that all the way along.

“Crystal Palace had an excellent result and Sunderland were within minutes of getting a great victory. That was the biggest message I got from last night. Yes, one of our rivals might have dropped points but that is irrelevant.”

Having dramatically downed City on Sunday, courtesy of a late strike by Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool maintained a two-point advantage over Chelsea at the Premier League summit with four matches remaining.

Keen to continue his mantra of navigating one fixture at a time, Rodgers stressed the level of competitiveness within the league, insisting that this weekend could be even more difficult because of Norwich’s precarious position.

“You have to do your own job,” the Northern Irishman continued. “The warning signs are there. When you’re so close to the finishing line you can maybe think that the job can be done and is done.

“Teams can look that they are playing teams towards the bottom of the league and that those games might be easy, but actually it’s the contrast – they can be even more difficult.

“People are fighting for their livelihoods, fighting for their lives, fighting for theiFabir children, fighting for the supporters. And they’re fighting to play in the best league in the world. That is the nuts and bolts of it.

“We have to stay calm and focus on what we want to achieve. Our determination is there, our fitness is there; you look at the intensity of the work of the team last week and it was phenomenal really.

“All the young players coped with the pressure and the older ones helped to get the team through. There certainly won’t be complacency or nerves. There won’t be pressure on us. It is the same demand as for every game – which is to play well and win.”
