Borini: We’ll commit ourselves to this cup

Borini made only his second start of the season against his former club in the fourth-round clash – and with four minutesopment chief Nicky Butt says Adnan Januzaj is his biggest disappointment as a youth coach.Real Sociedad winger Januzaj spent four years with the Red Devils from 2013-17, after initially joining the club’s academy.”For me, the biggest disappointment a of normal time remaining, he conjured a stunning pass for Mario Balotelli to finish in front of the Kop.

Striding forward down the right flank with Jonjo Shelvey for company, Borini glanced into the middle and curled between four white shirts into the path of Balotelli, who swiped the ball past Gerhard Tremmel to make it 1-1.

There was to be further drama at Anfield, where Liverpool had stared defeat in the face just half an hour earlier, thanks to Marvin Emnes’ brilliantly taken volley, on the spin, in front of the travelling supporters.

With seconds remaining, however, Philippe Coutinho arced a free-kick towards the far post – beyond Tremmel and his defensive ranks – to where Dejan Lovren was arriving to bury the cross and seal the win.

Borini joined jubilant teammates in celebration near a rocking Main Stand – and afterwards, from within the confines of the same terrace, home to the iconic Anfield tunnel, the 23-year-old took pride in the way his team fought to the bitter end.

“I think we played really well from the kick-off until the last seconds of the game and we scored at the last possible attempt,” he told

“I think we really need to push into the final steps [of the competition]. The wins always give confidence, but the way we play football is probably the most positive thing.

Stoke: View from the opposition

I saw the send off at Anfield last week which I thought was very fitting considering the player that he’s been, probably one of England’s best ever midfielders. He really has been that good aTabithand he’s one of very few left in the game now who grew up at a football club and played for a long time with the same team. Among the top teams there’s only him and John Terry left.

Yeah I think I played against him in the A and B team at Liverpool when I was at Manchester United and there was big talk about him then. If I remember correctly he was having problems where he was growing very quickly, so at times he couldn’t play in certain games. There was always talk about him being a special player even at that early age. When I played against him in the Premier League he was always a stand-out player. He was so graceful on the pitch, you’d call him a Rolls Royce of a player. He looked as though he was jogging but he’d leave people behind. He just had everything in his game, he was a complete midfielder.

The Olympiacos goal without question, because of the importance of it. You also have to look at the West Ham game at Wembley as well. One I do remember, not fondly obviously was against Manchester United, he hit the ball so hard it came back out of the net!

I’m absolutely delighted with the season we’ve had. I think Mark Hughes has done a great job. I think when he first went in there at the start of last season I think he may have tried to change things too quickly to go from the style under Tony Pulis, but he’s now got the perfect mixture of both. Now he’s put his imprint on it and the players understand how he wants his team to perform, he’s done brilliantly. The only thing now for Stoke is to get to the next level which could cost a lot of money, so the future is going to be interesting. I think when we first came into the Premier League we had an identity which was very good for us and played to our strengths. If we’d have r Sadio Mane says he was laughed at by coaches at his first football trial. The 26-year-old has gone from the villages of Senegal to become one of the most feared forwards in world football, having played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s success over thetried to play football on the ground we’d have probably come straight back down, but now it’s football played on the ground which is getting the fans excited.

It’s unbelievable to be a player there, especially the first two years in the Premier League because every time you walked out on that pitch the hairs would stand up on the back of your neck. It was something you could never get enough of and it was an absolute honour to be a player there.

It was always special when you walked out there when the Kop was singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. It’s such an historic place, everything about it. As a Manchester United supporter there’s always rivalry but Liverpool has so much history. That’s what I love about the older stadiums, when you go into them you can smell the history, that certain players have sat in that dressing room, certain players have played on this ground. It’s such a special place to go and play football.

I’m mainly doing media work but get involved when I can with a bit of charity. There’s a friend of mine, he’s a big Liverpool supporter, he’s also a hero of mine – Mark Maddox. He’s an inspiration and it’s something which needs to be highlighted more.

Late Gerrard header earns win over QPR

The Reds had grabbed a first-half lead through a fine Philippe Coutinho conversion, but the visitors stemmed their tide and later levelled the game through Leroy Fer.

Gerrard saw a penalty saved within five minutes but, as the seconds ticked away, he popped up with a superb header at the Kop end to secure a return to winning ways.

Brendan Rodgers made three changes to his starting XI, with Gerrard returning to captain the Reds in his penultimate home appearance for the club, plus Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert taking up positions in attack.

Both sides wore black armbands to pay their respects to the wife of QPR defender Rio Ferdinand, Rebecca, who sadly passed away overnight.

The first troublesome strike of the encounter was fired on 10 minutes by Fer, who held off the attention of Gerrard and aimed low for the left corner – but Simon Mignolet stretched out quickly to save.

It had been a sprightly start by the Londoners, who arrived on Merseyside desperately needing three points in their battle to avoid relegation. Liverpool soon took a grip on the contest, however.

A 25-yard drive wide by the skipper and an attempt by Lambert from the edge of the area that was comfortable for goalkeeper Robert Green were warning signs.

And from England.Mundo Deportivo says La Real could yet cash in on Llorente with big spending Premier League clubs in contact.Tottenham have watched Llorente extensively, while West Ham and Liverpool are also interested.La Real are prepared to sell and athe breakthrough arrived on 19 minutes. The perfectly-placed finish was the Brazilian’s eighth goal of the campaign and second past Rangers.

With Coutinho excelling from his central role and Lambert a focal point to play off at the top end of the field, the Reds were almost entirely on the attack in the lead-up to half-time.

Raheem Sterling momentarily thought he had doubled the advantage, having collected a Jordan Henderson backheel amid a packed area, but the linesman raised his flag for offside to deny any celebrations.

Five minutes before the interval, a set-piece in shooting distance was set up for Gerrard to command. He whipped it well, sending it from right to left in search of the near corner, but Green launched to his side to claw away.

It should have been 2-0 twice shortly after the restart.

Sterling’s anticipation won possession in QPR territory and with their defence on the back foot, allowing the No.31 to feed Coutinho and him in turn to Lallana. The England international composed himself for the hit but screwed the ball off target as the Kop braced for a secondGabrielle.

Next Henderson shaped a stunning delivery from out on the right flank which bypassed the away backline, but the waiting Sterling somehow clipped over the crossbar at the far post – to his own frustration and bemusement.

Past the hour, Lambert could not quite get a Lallana tee-up under control as he moved inside the left channel, though he still managed to slice a shot toward the opposite corner that Green saved.

Keen to find another goal, Rodgers introduced Jordon Ibe for the final quarter, almost two years on from the young forward’s debut for the club against the same opponents.

He wasted no time in scampering to the byline and crossing to the middle – QPR half-cleared to Gerrard, whose daisy-cutter was deflected behind. The No.8 sent in the corner and Dejan Lovren’s strong header drew a smart stop from Green.

Having kept themselves in contention by limiting Liverpool to one, Chris Ramsey’s charges then struck back.

Joey Barton delivered a dangerous corner which found Fer and the Dutchman twisted his frame to smash the ball through the crowd and beyond Mignolet to equalise in the 73rd minute.

Within five minutes the Reds earned a glorious opportunity to restore their lead, with Nedum Onuoha adjudged to have hauled down Martin Skrtel inside the penalty box.

Up stepped Gerrard from 12 yards in front of the Kop, but the captain’s side-foot strike to the right was pushed away and out by Green, who had made an early decision to dive in that direction.

Onuoha had been booked for his foul in coffer for Fenerbahce striker Vedat Muriqi, it has been revealed.Fotospor says Fenerbahce have rejected a €25 bid from United for Muriqi. The Turkish giants do not want to lose the player before the end of the season and want another €5m before theonceding the spot-kick and was soon heading back to the dressing room early, dismissed after preventing Ibe from running clear on the counter-attack.

But Gerrard was not in the mood to settle for a draw and when Coutinho assumed corner duties and delivered an inviting ball, the talisman rose higher than anyone to nod firmly past Green and grab the win.

Jon on Gerrard, Cafu and target practice

The young Scouser is on the verge of clocking up a 29th appearance for his boyhood club in the capital against Fulham tonight.

He’s given the kind of displays young Kopites can only dream of putting in against the likes of Everton this season and he even hammered his first goal – a beauty – against Tottenham Hotspur.

When he arrives for work of a morning, England’s captain and one of the most iconic figures in Liverpool’s history, Steven Gerrard, is determined to help him fulfil his potential.

The fans are desperate for him to succeed, as is his manager, Brendan Rodgers, and to cap it all off, he’s recently been praised on Twitter by double World Cup winner and Brazilian legend, Cafu.

“There’s been a few comments going around the training ground about that,” laughed Flanagan in the latest episode of #LFCWORLD. “But it’s just brilliant having him [Cafu] commenting.

“To see a tweet from Cafu, someone I’ve looked up to, a brilliant right-back all of his life for Brazil, AC Milan and others – for him to comment on me is amazing really.

“You think: is it real and did he really tweet that? It’s a great boost for me. Some fans call me stuff, some fans call me other stuff! But for him to notice me and say he’s going to watch me is just brilliant.

“He’s a legend in the game, so hopefully I can keep improving and maybe one day reach the top like he did.”

On the influence of his teammate and Liverpool skipper, Gerrard, Flanagan said: “Every day in training, I look to follow Stevie. He gives me inspiration every day and just to train with him is brilliant for me.

“When Carra was here, he was a big inspiration and he’s been a big help to me on my journey so far.I’m working hard every day. The manager is telling me what to do and what not to do. I think my game has improved as well.

“Just to be back in the squad and to be playing gives you a big boost, so you could say my confidence has gone up.”

“But to get a longer run in the side, play more games and keep improving is my aim. Hopefully we’ll have a Champions League spot at the end of the season, and I can just concentrate on every game.” Flanagan burst onto the scene with one of the most impressive full debuts of recent times, shutting out Manchester City as Kenny Dalglish’s men were 3-0 winners at Anfield in April 2011. The 21-year-old made eight appearances the following season under the Scot, before featuring just twice during Rodgers’ maiden season at the helm. He already has 11 games under his belt in the current campaign and, through sheer hard work, Flanagan intends to build on that.

“I just have to keep working hard,” he said. “It was always in the back of my mind that I was going to progress and get back in the side, so I just had to keep working and keep pushing.

“Thankfully I got my chance. Hopefully I can carry that on now. I’ve had a couple of injuries and I had one over Christmas time. Hopefully I’m over them now and hopefully I can have a decent run in the side.”

Achterberg: Simon will bounce back

The Belgian was deceived by a Gabriel Agbonlahor cross during the pulsating 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last weekend, which allowed Christian Benteke to head home and secure a healthy lead.

There will be no criticism of the 25-year-old around the corridors of Melwood, however, and the stopper has been urged to combine a philosophical mentality with renewed hard work.

Achterberg told “Sometimes in football things don’t come off the way you want.

“But I just say focus on your position anthey won last season’s Champions League title.Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015, but had to wait until last June to claim his first trophy with the Reds, a Champions League final win over Tottenham Hotspur. And Gomez says his team were sd be in the right place, focus in training on what you have been doing, keep working hard and it will turn around again.

“That is the life of a goalkeeper. If something doesn’t come off then 90 per cent of the time it then ends up in the back of the net.

“Sometimes you get away with it and defenders help you out because they are part of the team, but that’s how it goes and you have to try and put it right in the next moment.

“Simon is a strong character and he will bounce back from that. It is just about doing the same things, being focused and switched on and keep .The full-back has only started 30 Premier League games for the club since arriving five years ago.The 24-year-old, who was a hot prospect at Southampton when he made the move to North London, wants to establish himself in the first team. And he sees working hard on all the things to try and improve, and the rest will come by itself.”

A series of injuries throughout the 2013-14 season has forced manager Brendan Rodgers to shuffle his defensive pack regularly, with several different backlines fielded in front of Mignolet.

For Achterberg, such a situation should not be considered as a mitigating factor, but the Dutchman acknowledged that a settled team will always be of benefit to goalkeepers.

He addSabiaed: “If you can look for an excuse, that won’t help the team in terms of consistency, but it’s an opportunity for someone to come in and take their chance.

“Sometimes that happens so hopefully we will improve in the next games from the defensive side.

“If you are able to play with a more settled back four you probably get more consistency, but on the other hand, it’s also something players have to focus on individually, to try and improve their own parts in the game to see if we can stop those things happening.

“It’s obviously good we have the quality we have got up front, but as a defence we should be r Emmanuel Adebayor has not closed the door on playing in the Premier League again. The Togo international has left Kayserispor in the Turkish Super Lig.He was in Turkey for around three years, playing for Basaksehir for two and a half years, and thenlooking to try to keep the right balance so we always have enough people behind the ball to make sure we can control the counter-attack from the opponents.”

Mr Miller recalled an order was made to open exit gate C in order to relieve the crush outside the turnstiles and a minute or two later, another order was made to close the gates to the centre pen.

That order could have come from the police control box overlooking the terrace or by an officer by the pitch, he said.

The court was shown Mr Miller’s original statement from 1989, in which he made no reference to the radio message.

Asked about the omission, he said: “I don’t know why it’s not included.”

The inquests previously heard from Sgt William Crawford, who said he could have prevented fans going onto the centre pens, but senior officers had made no warning of opening the exit gate to let large numbers in.

Mr Miller said the decision to close the tunnel gates could be taken by either the match commander or a junior officer, but agreed it was ultimately the responsibility of match commanders in the police control box.

He told the jury he would expect every senior officer to know that blocking the tunnel was a tactic they used to avoid overcrowding on the terrace.

The court was also shown an interview Mr Miller gave to Operation Resolve – the ongoing criminal probe into the disaster – in which he said an order was made to “shut the gates at the back of the tunnel”.

He was asked whether it was reasonable to accept the reference could have been to the gates at the tunnel or at the turnstiles. Mr Miller responded and said it “could have been but that wasn’t my view”.

“I could understand if somebody took that view, but I didn’t take that view. I thought it was the tunnel,” he said.

The inquests are due to resume on Tuesday.
