Guests will include the likes of Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres, and first-team stars not on international duty as well as young talents from the Academy playing their part.

But the day is about much more than just a stellar 90 minutes of football and the chance to welcome the likes of Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia, Pepe Reina and more back to the hallowed Anfield turf.

As well as £30million appeal to provide a new Hospital in the Park, the match will help fund the Liverpool FC Foundation’s community programmes and lend support to four other charities in the local area. Here, we learn a bit more about each of those organisations…

Rodgers: Why my staff are critical

The manager believes the support of his coaching staff has been invaluable as the Reds have surged to the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

“I get wonderful support from my assistants,” Rodgers told the AC Milan. It’s been suggested Rangnick has agreed to take charge of Milan at the end of this season. However, Rangnick’s agent Marc Kosicke, who denied the presence of an agreement with Milan and explained why he has been in talks with their chief execLiverpool Echo.

“My staff here are absolutely critical to what we’ve done. I couldn’t do it on my own and they are a key part of the success here.”

Rodgers appointed Pascoe as his assistant g to strengthen his defence this summer with at least two signings. And the Spaniard rates the £30m-rated Holgate, according to the Mirror.Holgate has established himself in the first-team this season, and can operate at centre-back, right-back and dmanager when the pair joined Liverpool from Swansea City in June 2012.

The Welsh coach was already at the Swans when Rodgers arrived as boss in 2010 and the duo quickly formed a strong bond.

Rodgers said: “When I went into Swansea, I went in on my own.

“I felt that I probably diluted myself too much during my short tiUnited counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Saturday’s derby defeat.United produced their best away performance of the season for the 2-1 win – in the process leaving City’s title defence on the brink of collapse. The result has the current Premierme in charge at Reading.

“I needed to get back to taking the sessions and doing the work, but obviously you need capable assistants to work with you.

“I felt going to Swansea I needed people who shared the vision and the ideas.

“Colin had worked there under a few managers from Kenny Jackett to Roberto Martinez and Paulo Sousa. He had a clear identity with the Swansea ideas.

“I did my homework on him and found that he was a loyal, honest man. He was an attacking coach who was keen to work in this way. He understood the philosophy.

“I had no doubts about bringing Colin to Liverpool. He’s a wonderful co-ordinator between the players and myself.

“I work closely with players. I talk and communicate with them a lot and Colin offers great support on that front. They respect him.”

Upon being appointed at the Liverpool helm, Rodgers also moved to elevate Marsh from his role as U18s coach at the Academy to first-team duties at Melwood.

He added: “It’s very important for me that I have people from this city around me who understand exactly it means to play and work for Liverpool Football Club.

“Mike is a Liverpool boy who has a close affinity with the club. He is developing as a coach all the time and developing his communication with top players.”

RodTabithagers concluded: “What we have here behind the players is a professional team of people working in every facet of the game.

“Technically, tactically, medically and in terms of sports science, we’re working with a clear methodology and a clear vision of how we work on the field and how they can recuperate players off it.

“Key for my work at any club I’ve worked at is the mental skills aspect of a player. It’s something that can get frowned upon in some places but it’s very important to me.

“If you take care of the technical, tactical and physical elements then the mental skills perspective of a footballer is equally as important.

“Behind the team we have a really professional group of people. Everyone is working with a clear vision to be the very best.”

Reds’ Europa hopes ended in Istanbul

Tolgay Arslan restored parity in the tie when he netted the game’s only goal on 72 minutes, finding the top corner with a first-time strike from Demba Ba’s lay-off.

Ba then rattled the crossbar in added time as Besiktas sought a winner, but with the aggregate score poised at 1-1, extra-time and then penalties were required at the Ataturk Stadium.

The first nine were all successfully converted, but Dejan Lovren struck the final kick over the crossbar and the Reds exited the tournament at the last 32 stage.

Liverpool departed for Istanbul on Wednesday without the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Mamadou Sakho, Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho, Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic.

It meant the pre-match teamsheet showed four changes, including starts for Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge in attack. Meanwhile, Kolo Toure and Alberto Moreno also came into Brendan Rodgers’ XI, while Academy pair Cameron Brannagan and Jordan Williams were on the bench.

The venue for the tie was one with a strong emotional bond with Liverpool Football Club.

The Ataturk Stadium was, of course, the scene of the 2005 Champions League final victory over AC Milan – and though the Reds have since returned to the setting (in December 2006), it was somewhat fitting that almost 10 years on from that incredible night, the club should be back at the scene of perhaps their finest ever triumph.

The contest got underway in a sheer cauldron of noise as the home supporters attempted to roar, whistle and chant their team back onto level terms in a tie they trailed 1-0 thanks to a late Balotelli penalty at Anfield one week prior.

Besiktas’ players responded by snapping into every early tackle in a bid to stamp their authority on the clash in the opening exchanges.

But it was Liverpool who fashioned the game’s first real chance with 20 minutes played. Moreno’s tenacity down the left after receiving the ball from a Balotelli flick resulted in the ball breaking for Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box, but his drilled effors form.Referring to Everton’s defeat to Brighton, Cascarino wrote for The Times: “Yet another entry in the catalogue of Jordan Pickford errors shows why the Everton keeper’s days as England’s number 1 are numbered… beaten easily by a set piece, (wht was beaten away by the fists of Cenk Gonen.

The Reds’ threat was growing with each passing minute, and a counter-attack created the next opportunity of the evening. Once again it was Sterling who had it, but this time his swivel and hook was blocked by Necip Uysal.

Next, Sturridge brought a smart reflex stop out of Gonen after Balotelli had intercepted possession midway inside the Besiktas half and played in his strike partner, before a near-post prodded effort from Moreno was swept up by the home goalkeeper.

By now, the decibel levels had decreased by a few notches, but Olcay Sahan’s run and strike threated to raise the noise once again had it not been for the fists of Simon Mignolet. As it was, half-time was reached with the scoreline still goalless and Liverpool in control of their own destiny.

Besiktas started the second period with clear intent and Serdar Kurtulus and Jose Sosa each tried their luck in the early exchanges; however, Mignolet was able to thwart on both occasions.

The home side’s threCadenat had grown considerably, and Arslan was left clutching hisReal Sociedad as confusion reigns over the state of his contract. The 33-year-old’s £65,000-a-week contract was reportedly ended as the Gunners continue to shave their wage bill. It’s suggested the full-back’s six-year stint at the Emirates is now ove head in his hands when a blast from range narrowly evaded the upright.

But the substitute fared better on 72 minutes when he fired in the evening’s opening goal and levelled up the aggregate score.

Gokhan Tore’s ball into Ba was flicked off by the striker to Arslan inside the ‘D’, and he picked out the top corner with a first-time curler.

Rodgers responded by introducing Javier Manquillo and then Adam Lallana into the action, with Jordon Ibe and Balotelli making way.

But Besiktas were in the ascendancy ats show Antoine Griezmann is struggling to make an impact with his new club. The summer signing from Atletico Madrid has scored just one goal in his last eight matches and is becoming less and less involved in Barcelona’s play, making just 21 passes ind almost won it at the close when Ba pounced on a bouncing ball inside the box to smack a half-volley against the crossbar from yards out.

With no further goals, the evening progressed into extra-time and the Turkish team continued to push; Daniel Opare, Ba and Tore all taking pops at Mignolet’s goal in the minutes after the restart.

But the additional 30 minutes failed to yield another strike, meaning penalties would be required to determine the winner.

Ba, Rickie Lambert, Tore, Lallana, Veli Kavlak, Emre Can, Atiba Hutchinson, Joe Allen and Arslan all netted from the first nine kicks, but Lovren struck over the bar to confirm Liverpool’s Europa League exit.

With three games to go, their place in the group stages of next season’s Champions League is guaranteed.

It’s fair to say that expectations have been well and truly exceeded by Brendan Rodgers and his players this season. But with three games to go and a first title in 24 years in sight, they go again at home to Chelsea this Sunday.

The Blue continuing working in England.Emery is eager on a return to the Premier League – but is not expected to take the Everton job.Emery is out of work following his sacking by Arsenal , who axed the Spaniard last month after a dreadful run of seven gamess will be without John Terry, Petr Cech and Samuel Eto’o, while Eden Hazard missed the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday with a minor injury.

Liverpool’s form means a home win is odds on at 7/10. A price which has seen a massive amount of betting action with Reds fans getting fervently behind their team.

The last time Chelsea played at Anfield without Cech, Liverpool won 4-1. A repeat of that scoreline pays out Fabiat 22/1.

Luis Suarez notched his 30th league goal of the season in the win over Norwich City and has hit the net in two of his last three appearances against Chelsea. The Uruguayan is the obvious favourite to score first at 16/5 or anytime at 8/11. Daniel Sturridge, who could be set to return to the squad, is close behind at 4/1 and 10/11 respectively.

Raheem Sterling’s three goals in his last two games, combined with his overall performance level this season, make him another popular choice at 15/2 to score first and 21/10 to score anytime. The teenager has an impressive nine league goals already this season.

At the exact same prices you can back Steven Gerrard and don’t forget Martin Skrtel, the most profitable goalscorer in the Premier League this season. He’s 25/1 to score first and, having scored one of his seven league goals in the reverse fixture, is a great each-way punt.

Liverpool were dominant for the majority of the Barclays Premier League encounter at Anfield, moving their visitors from side to side, forward and backward to fashion the space in which to flex their scoring muscles.

The 3-4-3 formation that has helped the Reds rekindle their form during recent weeks blossomed further throughout a bitterly cold evening on Merseyside, with supporters in attendance warmed by Alberto Moreno’s opener.

Lallana chased down Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski early in the second half and turned a seemingly futile cause into a healthier advantage when the subsequent clearance clattered off him and into the Kop end net.

Gylfi Sigurdsson reduced the arrears almost immediately, but the No.20 grabbed a brace in the contest with a smart dribble and finish, while an own goal by Jonjo Shelvey capped a handsome result for Rodgers’ charges.

The manager told reporters after the final whistle: “That was what was missing from our way of working for the first period of this season. We’re a team that plays with big pressure [on the opponents].

“We’ve got technically-gifted players in the team, but that ability to press the ball allows them to go and get and create chances at the top end of the field. We asked the players at that end to go and press and work, and he got his reward.

“That might only happen a couple of times in your career when you go and get goals like that. He blocked it really well because if he doesn’t block the line tactically coming into the press, the goalkeeper probably rolls it out to the other centre-half.

“He blocked the line, that forced the ‘keeper to kick it, he got his body there and got tinsists there’s no panic over the transfer interest for Denis Zakaria.Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are all following the Switzerland international. But Eberl told Sport Buzzer: “First of all, we have everything in hand, because there is nohe bit of luck his pressing deserved. I’m very pleased. I think he’s a wonderfully gifted player.

“It was a big move for him coming here from Southampton, where he was the captain. For all of the players coming in it is difficult. You come into a club this size with the expectancy, you never know it until you arrive here.

“But I think they’re now starting to adapt to that and starting to adapt to what we demand here and how far we want to go. You look at the team tonight and it was a very young team in terms of the average age of that side. I was very pleased with the overall performance of Adam and the team.”

The result racked up back-to-back festive victories for Liverpool following the Boxing Day win over Burnley, with a home clash against Leicester City the last of three quick-fire fixtures on New Year’s Day.

Three points lifted the Reds above Swansea into eighth place and closed the gap to the Premier League top four and Champions League qualification spots to five points at the halfway stage of the campaign.

Rodgers continued: “In the last two to three weeks the performance level has been much closer to what we were over the course of the last 18 months.

“There’s been a lot of work and hours going into the tactical idea that was going to allow us to get back to that. It wasn’t traditional because we’re having to play a young guy who is a winger as that striker, but the shape of the team causes other teams problems.

“When you have the players that want to go and press the ball, work as hard as they did tonight, and then have got the quality to back that up, you can be a really hard team to play against. That’s how it’s been for us.

“Apart from a ridiculous spell of seven or eight minutes when we scored the second goal, when we gave the ball away cheaply, conceded and then tried our best to give them another goal, it was a really dominant performance I felt.

“The structure of the team was very good in terms of how the players worked it. We asked the back three to open up the game when we had the ball and create the overload.

“The two guys on the side, the full-backs, allow you to drop into a shape that’s solid when you haven’t got the ball but when you have it they have the freedom to go really high and push on.

“We’ve got a box in midfield that gives you four players in there to dominate. Then you’ve got a central striker who can run, spin up the sides and get in between people. I thought how the team worked was very good.

“Tonight we came out and put that intensity and work-rate into the game and we got our reward for that. Creativity was very much there tonight but a solid base behind it as well – that is key for us if we are going to succeed.”

Emre Can, one of four players brought into the starting XI, began the game against Swansea in the same situation he found himself at the end of the tie at Turf Moor – operating as part of a back three alongside Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel.

The German U21 international – making only his eighth appearance in the league since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen – was poised and creative throughout, sitting in alongside his defensive partners and hished praise on Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk after the team’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United.Mourinho was a pundit for the game in England and offered his analysis on both teams. When asked about the qualities of Reds centre-back Van Dijk, Melping to keep the opposition at bay.

Can raked cross-field passes, controlled dangerous crosses with stunning composure and, in all, turned in a display that prompted Rodgers to offer a glowing appraisal of the youngster’s obvious talent.

“The idea tonight was that we had the flexibility to flip the system,” explained the Northern Irishman. “We had two full-backs who were attacking full-backs.

“If we had wanted to drop them two in and push [Can] into midfield, we could have done that. With him in that controlling role, it would have made our shape into a back four.

“It’s very important that we have players who are confident on the baenham defender. The 32 year-old Belgium international comes off contract in June and is yet to seriouslBabettey discuss new terms with Spurs.Agent Tim de Mul revealed: “We don’t have an agreement at the moment, but I don’t exclude anything. “We consider evll. When I watched Emre last year, one of the games that I travelled to, in Hamburg, he was playing as a centre-half in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

“You see his presence – he’s got size and he’s got a good leap. He’s quick and strong, so he can play anywhere on the field. He’s played at left-back, he plays in centre midfield. The only two positions that he has not played in when I’ve seen him was at centre-forward and in goal.

“He’s a wonderful player and at 20 years of age he’s got a big future ahead. He’s a player who is adapting into a way of working over in this country.

“It’s been a big move for him. In training over the last three or four weeks, he has stepped up to a new level. You can see that in his performances since he has come in.”

The Brazilian put pen to paper on the deal at Melwood on Tuesday, three days after lighting up Anfield with a trademark, eluDaltonsive display of skill to help the Reds sink West Ham United on Saturday.

Coutinho opened up the visitors by assisting both goals in the game, playing in Raheem Sterling for the first before rekindling his intuitive link-up with the returning Daniel Sturridge for 2-0.

It was the latest in a string of impressive performances from the midfielder, who has thrived as part of a liberated front three in recent weeks.

Rodgers insists Coutinho, who has delighted supporters with his displays this season, can improve further – and he’s backed the playmaker to thrive in a key role for the club going forward.

He arrived as a young man, in a country he’d never lived in before and joined a club where expectations are high. He has shown a willingness to listen, learn and improve.”

Rodgers believes Coutinho, who arrived on Merseyside in January 2013, can act as an inspiration to the handful of youngsters at the club, as he singled out the No.10’s personality and dedication to the cause for particular praise.

“I love working with players like Philippe; he has an attitude to match his talent, but underlying all of that is a humble approach to his work and his life.

“It is my hope now that he continues with his improvement and development and becomes a figurehead for this exciting, vibrant, youthful squad of players, as we look to grow as a group and achieve success together.”

Liverpool go sixth with Saints success

Philippe Coutinho put the Reds into a third-minute lead with a goal of the highest order – finding the top corner from range with a ferocious drive that left Fraser Forster grasping air.

The showdown between the Champions League qualification chasing rivals proved engrossing, with the Saints threatening on several occasions.

However, Raheem Sterling decided the outcome on 73 minutes, drilling Matt Targett’s wayward clearance into the back of the net and sending Brendan Rodgers’ side into sixth in the standings.

Liverpool made three changes from Thursday’s win over Besiktas. Mamadou Sakho was ruled out with a hip injury, so Dejan Lovren stepped in against his former employers. Sterling and Lazar Markovic also returned to the starting XI, with Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno dropping to the bench.

With plenty at stake on the south coast, the game began at an incredible pace in dreadful weather conditions.

There was less than a minute on the clock and the hosts were baying for a penalty when Filip Djuricic went to ground under a challenge from Emre Can as he made his way into the area.

Referee Kevin Friend waved away the appeals and Liverpool broke forward – to devastating effect. Coutinho took possession of the ball 25 yards from goal and let fly with a swerving drive that thundered against the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line.

The visitors’ celebrations were almost instantly muted when Djuricic crashed to the turf inside the area once more – this time under the attentions of Joe Allen. Again, play was allowed to continue and the ball broke for Eljero Elia, whose close-range shot was turned around the base of the post by Simon Mignolet’s boot.

But Southampton were asking questions of Liverpool in what was proving a fascinating encounter, while at the other end, the speed and his Bosman switch from Atletico Madrid on Monday.“I came to Inter to win, to give my all and give all of myself: my body and soul, on and off the field,” the former Atletico Madrid captain told Inter TV.“A new challenge and a new experience begi zip of the away team’s counterHallie attacks were a persistent menace.

Clear-cut chances remained at a premium, however, until a minute before half-time when Nathaniel Clyne’s ball over the top allowed Elia to breach the offside trap and get a clear run at goal. Liverpool’s custodian was called into action once more before the break, saving smartly from Djuricic at a corner to ensure their lead remained intact at the break.

Rodgers elected to make a change ahead of the resumption of the clash, with Moreno replacing Markovic.

Still, the encounter remained delicately poised – the Reds needed Martin Skrtel to get his body in the wayal boss Mikel Arteta says they need to reclaim a fear factor at Emirates stadium.Arteta concedes the club has lost it’s gloss in recent years. He told Sky Sports: “This stadium has to create fear again. I used to hate coming here as an opponent, and w of a turn-and-hook from substitute Sadio Mane to prevent Mignolet from being called upon.

With 62 minutes on the clock, Sturridge entered the action to replace ex-Saint Adam Lallana – and the striker was quickly making a nuisance of himself, supplying a driven centre which Jordan Henderson scooped over the bar from 12 yards.

As the game inched towards its conclusion, Liverpool made certain of a crucial three points when Sterling arrived on cue to make it 2-0.

The No.31 spread the ball wide to Moreno, whose driven centre didn’t manage to pick out a teammate; however, Targett’s attempt to clear only succeeded in sending the ball back into the danger zone, and Sterling was on hand to steer beyond Forster and send the travelling Kop into raptures.

With Southampton spirits dampened, Liverpool successfully navigated the closing stages to collect what could prove a crucial three points in the race for a top-four finish.
