American players philosophical about Team USA loss

content_img

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — When it comes to the World Baseball Classic, it seems that major-league players and managers are like any other fans.

The guys from countries like the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are passionate. The Americans are philosophical.

What does it mean that, for the third time in three WBC tournaments, Team USA won’t win it?

“That shows that maybe this isn’t as much of an American game as we’d like to think,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said Saturday.

Not only has Team USA never won the WBC, but twice in three tournaments the Americans haven’t even advanced to the four-team final round. Team USA made it to the semifinals in 2009, then lost to Japan.

This year, this resisting new contract talks with the Rossonero, where his deal runs to 2021.Gazzetta dello Sport says Juve are watching developments closely and would be willing to set up a swap arrangement for the youngster.Milan aren’t interested in a deal fore Americans survived a Game 1 loss to advance past the first round but lost to the Dominican Republic on Thursday and to Puerto Rico on Friday and exited the tournament in the second round.

“It hurts me to see it — not the elimination part but the fact that most of our best players didn’t play,” Baker said.

Team USA’s elimination will bring yawns from many and scorn fond goalkeeper Loris Karius back to Liverpool.Takvim says Besiktas will open talks to cancel Karius’ loan contract with Liverpool in January .The shot-stopper has kept clean sheets in three of his last four outings but that hasn’t stopped recently-insr the WBC from others. Some will complain about the way the tournament is set up. of the Rockies doesn’t buy the most common excuses.

“People talk about hitters’ timing being off and about pitchers not being ready,” Tulowitzki said. “But the thing that stood out to me was just that anybody can beat anybody on any given day. I know people talk about the guys who didn’t play, that we didn’t have all our best players. That might help. But at the end of the day, anything can happen.

“You can’t sit and make excuses. It’s just baseball, at the end of the day.”

Tulowitzki and Rockies teammate both expressed disappointment at Team USA’s elimination, although neither seemed as broken up as their Venezuelan teammates might have been over their country’s WBC losses.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m not disappointed in the players for losing,” Cuddyer said. “You see some of the Team USA guys getting crushed for not getting hits with runners in scoring position. Hey, it’s their 20th at-bat in four months.

“Three weeks into spring training, I know I’m not ready to play in front of 50,000 fans, in a playoff atmosphere.”

Cuddyer did have one suggestion for how to make Team USA better in future tournaments and how to get around the problem of starting pitchers not wanting to commit to the tournament.

“I would build a pitching staff with all relievers,” he said. “Then I’d pitch them one inning at a time.”

Perhaps Baker will be the one to decide in the future. He said Saturday that he wouldn’t mind managing Team USA, once his major-league managerial career is done.

For now, he watches along with the rest of us. He sees the passion that players from other counteak.Chelsea now have a fortnight off after their 2-2 draw at Leicester City.Lampard said, “Being a footballer is a fortunate job. You do what you love. Sometimes you get home after lunchtime. But it’s also taxing with the pressure, taxing on the playries show.

“Some of it is over-emotion,” Baker said. “Some of it is close to clowning.”

But those teams are still playing, and Team USA isn’t.

Maybe this isn’t as much of an American game as we’d like to think.

Tigers still have a question to answer about their closer’s role

content_img

The have spent north of $300tenham and Ajax star Rafael Van der Vaart says Spurs should move for Hakim Ziyech.Van der Vaart sees the Ajax midfielder as a replacement for Christian Eriksen.”I hope Ziyech goes to Tottenham and I think it will happen,” he said. “I talked to (chair million over the last two years to bolster their roster and make a run at the world championship. They were swept by the Giants in the Fall Classic last year, but they remain an excellent club and the clear favorite in the AL Central. That’s why their passive approach to the closer’s role during the offseason was surprising.

The decision to let 34-year-old Jose Valverde walk as a free agent was understandable. While Valverde saved 35 games and pitched to a 3.78 ERA for Detroit in 2012, he struggled in September (5.02 ERA) and was completely unusable in the postseason (30.38 ERA). It’s no secret why the right-hander remains unemployed though spring training is well underway.

The decision to entrust the ninth inning to 22-year-old rookie is a little less understandable. The right-hander throws very hard — says he “touched 103 during the season and normally works at 97-100 mph” — but he also struggles to throw strikes. Last summer, he walked 26 in 53 innings (4.4 BB/9), the year before that 34 in 40 innings (7.7 BB/9). Rondon has never pitched in the big leagues, and he has a whopping eight innings at the Triple-A level. At least one scout has some concerns:

“He’s throwing 98 mph on March 1 and not missing any bats. Hitters see his fastball for some reason.”

— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1)

Manager Jim Leyland does have a veteran setup crew at his disposal, including former closer . The 39-year-old has not closed in two years now, and he does struggle against lefties (108 OPS+ in 2013), making him a less than ideal candidate ninth inning candidate. Righty , 35, has been rock solid for three seasons now (2.71 ERA), but he became alarmingly homer prone in 2012 — 14 homers allowed in 71 innings (1.8 HR/9), including eight allowed during a 15 1/3-inning stretch at midseason. That’s scary.

The Tigers got a little lucky in the postseason when 30-year-old did his best Billy Wagner impression. The lefty pitched to a 4.00 ERA during the regular season but replaced Valverde as closer in October, allowing only one run and striking out 13 in 10 1/3 innings. Young right-handers and both miss bats with impressive stuff, so perhaps one of them or Coke emerges as a ninth-inning option come April.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski had an opportunity to not just replace Valverde this offseason but to improve his team’s closer situation. Forty-two-save man Rafael Soriano was the big free-agent reliever on the market, but others like Jonathan Broxton, Koji Uehara, Ryan Madson, Joakim Soria and former Tiger Kyle Farnsworth were available as well. Former Giants closer Brian Wilson remains unsigned, but he is recovering from Tommy John surgery like Madson and Soria. Able bodies were out there if Dombrowksi wanted to add someone from the outside.

Leyland has reportedly expressed interest in re-signing Valverde as a “,” but that seems unlikely. Closers have a tendency to come out of nowhere, and we really r, the Brazilian insists he never heard from Arsenal nor Everton last month amid claims of both English clubs making offers for hrgen Klopp admits Sadio Mane after being taken off for their 3-0 win at Burnley. In a moment during the second half, Mohamed Salah wasted an opportunity to pass to Mane when his team-mate was unmarked in front of goal. And asked if he knew why Mane wasim. He told Telefoot: “Contact with Arsenal? No. And with (Everton manager) Carlo Ancelotti? No.”(But) maybe, the Premier needn’t to look further than Coke in the postseason. The Tigers could very well have a lights-out closer already in house in Rondon or Alburquerque or whoever, but that guy hasn’t stepped forward just yet. The closer’s role is a question the team will have to answer during the regular season because they opted for a half-measure when it could have been handled over the winter.

Roger Clemens to return to Astros in ‘active role’

By the sounds of it, Roger Clemens will not be pitching for the again. He will, however, be teachingarding the future of midfielder Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan has been the subject of exit rumours since he arrived at the club last summer.Reports have emerged from Italy suggesting he could go back to Serie A on an initial loan and eventually a perm pitching in some capacity for the Astros. as saying this about Clemens’ anticipated return to the organization: “We’ve got the whole calendar mapped out, and we’re going to sort of figure out what makes sense. But the idea is to plug him in in spring training, plug him in throughout the season and just have him get a lot more involved with our pitchers.”

The “throughout the season” part of Luhnow’s comments suggests that this ishampton last weekend.Reid told the Liverpool Echo: “He’s shown a desire, he’s looking to hit forward passes, he’s good with or without the ball and he’s notched against Southampton at the back stick.”I think his form has been terrific and it just sho going to be something more than the usual “spring-training instructor” gig that so many franchise stalwarts dip their toes into from time to time. And, yes, the Astros already have a pitching coach.

Regardless of what you think of Clemens, his greatness is unassailable. He found success in the bullpen, allowing just two earned runs in 13 1/3 innings over 18 appearances, good for a 1.35 ERA to go along with a 0.60 WHIP and 19 strikeouts.

Pineda is out for the entire 2012 season as he’s rehabbing from shoulder surgery. He came over to the Yankees in a trade on January 23 with Jose Campos in exchange for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi.

Astros, Blue Jays make 10-player trade

The and pulled off a trade on Friday. While none of the names involved makes it anything close to a “blockbuster,” the deal did involve 10 names. Executive summary: Toronto fortified its major-league pitching staff, while Houston added some mid-grade prospects to the fold.

Here’s who’s going to the Jays by way of the Astros: RHP , LHP and RHP .

And here’s who’s going to Houston: RHP OF , RHP Joe Musgrove, RHP Asher Wojciechowski, LHP David Rollins, C Carlos Perez, and a player to be named later.

From Toronto’s standpoint, they add a useful reliever in Lyon and a functioning arm to add to the rotation in Happ. As for Carpenter, he could provide back-end relief help in Toronto or be kept at the Triple-A level for the time being.

Without the votes, Moorad had no way into the owners’ club

The club of major-league owners is like just about any other club.If you want in, you’d better have people already there who want you in. And not people who badly want to keep you out.Jeff Moorad wanted to be an owner, wanted to be in the club. The club didn’t want him, something that has become clearer and clearer in recent weeks.Moorad needed 22 votes of approval to become the Padres owner. He didn’t have them. Two weeks ago, he withdrew his application for control, ostensibly because it was the only way for the Padres to get their new television deal approved in time for their first spring training telecast.Thursday, Moorad went a step further, adres CEO.All that remains is for John Moores, who still owns 51 percent of the team (with Moorad’s group owning the other 49), to find a new buyer, one who can get approval. It’s probably better if he finds one who wasn’t a player agent, as Moorad was. It’s definitely better for him to find one who ha crowd after selling more than 50,000 tickets for a game against Germany at Wembley in November, reports BBC Sport. The previous record was 45,619 when Germany were also the opponents and claimed a 3-0 win at Wembley in 2014.”We are really grateful fosn’t annoyed other owners, as Moorad had.According to sources, Moorad had two strong voices campaigning against him, in White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick. Moorad was a limited partner of Kendrick’s before leaving to buy the Padres, and the breakup didn’t go well. With Reinsdorf and Kendrick strongly opposing him, Moorad faced an uphill battle to get the 22 votes he needed, as CBSSports.com colleague Jon Heyman Sources now tell Heyman that in recent weeks even Moorad’s relationship with Moores has soured. It also didn’t help Moorad that after baseball suffered through the Frank McCourt embarrasment, MLB officials have become more vigilant about making sure prospective owners have enough financial backing to run a team properly. There were questions about Moorad’s financing.Moores figures to come out of this all right, and probably even richer. Ravens’ Lamar Jackson says he hates running, would rather ‘just sit back and pass’

content_img

Watching move, you might assume the quarterback really enjoys running the football.

And you’d be wrong.

“I hate running,” Jackson . “Only if I have to, but my job is to get the ball to the receivers, the tight ends, running backs. If I have to run, I’ll do it, but I’d rather just sit back and pass it. I like throwing touchdowns instead of running them.”

It might be hard to believe considering Jackson averaged 17 rushes per game as a starter during his 2018 rookie season, which he finished with 695 yards on the ground — more than half his yardage total through the air. But the former first-round drould be ready for Tottenham on Sunday. The French winger is trying his best to get fit for the Premier League clash this weekend. He is training on his own and may train with the team on Friday to get himself into contention for the game.”I think thereaft pick came into 2019 with , and so far, that’s held up. , Jackson iseague thumping by Bayern Munich.Chelsea were completely outclassed all night by the Bundesliga giants and Jorginho, who will miss the second leg in Munich through suspension, claims Bayern are serious contenders to win the Champions League.”It is ver now averaging ed to enjoy his career as he admits retirement is getting closer.Messi made the admission after winning his sixth Ballon d’Or.He stated: “As we just saw in the video, 10 years ago I received my first Ballon d’Or in Paris. I remember I came with my thjust nine carries per game.

That’s still more rushes than most QBs pull off during a single game, let alone a three-week stretch, but Jackson’s athleticism — and that the Ravens might run him more — actually suggest No. 8 is holding back when it comes to breaking out of the pocket. It’s not as if his teammates are unaware of his ability to move.

“He’s wild, man,” running back said, per ESPN. “He’s amazing. I don’t think there is anything like him in the league, as far as just extending plays and being able to juke defenders. He’s special. He can extend plays and buy time for us to get open, receivers to get open, or him take off and run at the last resort and juke people, spin around people, make people fall.”

So far this season, Jackson’s produced 172 yards and one touchdown on the ground. He’s been even more dangerous, however, throwing the ball. During Baltimore’s 2-1 start, the second-year signal-caller has thrown 863 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions for a passer rating of 113.9 — good for fifth-best in the .

2019 NFL Draft: Biggest combine snubs include big Nebraska running back, receiver who shined at Senior Bowl

content_img

The 2019 NFL Combine list is out, and after scouring all 338 prospects invited to this year’s athleticism exhibition in Indianapolis, I’ve identified the biggest snubs.

You can check out , but now, let’s get to the eight players I believe deserve to be at the combine.

Devine Ozigbo, RB, Nebraska

Ozigbo is the combine-snub headliner after his 1,082-yard campaign at Nebraska in 2018 that featured a hefty 7.0 yards per carry. At 6-foot and around 235 pounds, Ozigbo is a load, but he’s not a straight downhill back. He’s flexible, can make defenders miss on occasion, and is capable of making cuts you wouldn’t expect for such a big back. Ozigbo is currently my No. 87 overall prospect and RB7.

Penny Hart, WR, Georgia State

Hart dazzled at the Senior Bowl just a few weeks ago, in the eyes of many. He outshined fellow slot receiver Andy Isabella with crisp, elusive routes, soft hands (better than he showed on film), and plenty of quickness to make cornerbacks miss in space. Maybe scouts saw enough in Mobile? Hart was a late add to the Senior Bowl roster and averaged 13.7 yards per grab with 669 receiving yards in 2018, so the production could be scaring some teams away. Then again, Hart made 72 receptions for 1,109 yards (15.4 yards per) with eight scores as a freshman in 2015.

Malik Reed, EDGE/LB, Nevada

Reed isn’t the biggest outside linebacker at a listed 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, but he performed admirably throughout his illustrious career at Nevada as both an edge rusher and traditional, off-ball linebacker. He registered 25.5 tackles for loss and 16 sacks over the past two seasons. He doesn’t have a clear-cut trump card. However, Reed is smooth around the corner and uses his hands well to defeat bigger blockers. There’s some sideline-to-sideline range to his game too.

Darwin Thompson, RB, Utah State

The complete opposite of Ozigbo pertaining to size, the 5-foot-8, 200-pound back has a tiny frame but runs like an angry hornet. A junior college transfer, Thompson spent just one year at Utah State and averaged 6.8 yards per carry with 14 rushing scores en route to a 1,044-yard campaign. He’s twitchy and has serious long speed to hit home runs.

, OG, NC State

Here’s a prospect I clearly like much, much more than the . Prescod is currently my OG1, just outside of Round 1. But the 6-foot-4, 335-pound redshirt senior with a super-strong anchor and impressive lateral agility for his size won’t be in Indianapolis later this month and into the first week of March. He’ll have to exhibit his athleticism at the NC mpleted his move to Paris Saint-Germain.It brings to an end his five-season stay at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. It was made clear to the Costa Rican that Thibaut Courtois was going to be Real Madrid’s No.1 goalkeeper moving forward, so he asked ZinState pro day.

Olamide Zaccheaus, WR, Virginia

Zaccheaus was the Cavaliers offense in 2018 with 1,073 yards on 93 catches and nine receiving touchdowns. That came after he hauled in 85 passes in 2017 and 51 in 2016. At 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds with excellent wiggle, reliable hands, and deceptive long speed, Zaccheaus projects perfectly to a slot/gadget position in the pros. He had big games against NC State (9-109-2) and in the Belk Bowl against South Carolina (12-100-3).

Cortez Broughton, DT, Cincinnati

Broughton came out of nowhere in 2018 with 18.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks after 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in his first three seasons at Cincinnati. He has a lightning-fast first step and converts that quickness to low-center-of-gravity power. Heck, his defensive tackle teammate had good candidacy for a combine invite too.

Anthony Ratliff-Williams, WR, North Carolina

Ratliff-Williams proved to be a bigor a return to action after the international break.James was forced to withdraw from England U21 duty on Thursday due to an ankle injury, but he’s expected to be back in training next week.According to the Daily Mail, the injury is not serious.Rudig-play threat on some bad North Carolina teams after Mitchell Trubisky bolted for the NFL after the 2016 season. In 2017, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound receiver averaged 18 yards per grab with eight touchdowns. This past year, he aveng Chelsea at the end of this season. That’s according to Joao Castelo-Branco, of ESPN, who says the Bosman prospect is now leaning towards walking out on Chelsea when his deal expires in June.He stated: “Just spoke to Willian’s PR team and they say traged 16.4 yards per reception with six more scores. He has impressive build-up speed and flashed the ability to win in jump-ball situations.
