Photo of the day, Part II: Pete Rose, ‘The Battler’

We already had a , so I guess we’ll call this Part II.

Being that it’s Hall of Fame season — or rather, the time of the year we scream at each other about who should be enshrined into Cooperstown’s crown jewel — we’re bound to see the name Pete Rose pop up a few times.

No, Rose still isn’t in the Hall of Fame nor is he on the ballot. That doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. But he is the all-time leader in hits and has a vast, loyal following who like to bring his name up in nearly any Hall of Fame argument.

World Series ratings might be lowest ever, but does it really matter?

(Getty IManchester United captain Nemanja Vidic feels Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is ready to leave Lazio for a bigger stage. The Serb has been linked with United, along with the likes Real Madrid and PSG.Vidic told TMW of his countryman: “He has quality and has mages)

After hearing throughout the World Series how bad the ratings were, is it really any surprise this year’s Series likely will be the lowest-rated in history?

There are reports that this series will mark a new low for the World Series, . Although there was a spike for the final game, the first two games were seen by fewer people than any other World Series game in history.

There will be plenty of people who use this as a signal of doom for baseball and its biggest stage. You can find those histrionics and overreactions other places. As for me? I just don’t care. It’s not that big of a deal. Why not? Well, ratings are down everywhere, especially as we move to a post-TV world, where people get their entertainment on other devices than the television. Ratings are less important now than they’ve ever been; ratings are an antiquated measurement for popularity — like album sales or box-office receipts.

Actually, the game is doing just fine.

Major League Baseball just signed an eight-year TV deal with Fox and Turner for an average of $800 million a year to broadcast postseason games. That’s in addition to the ESPN deal that will pay approximately $700 million a year from 2014-21, nearly double what it was paying before.

The Dodgers are banking on the possibility of local TV rights package worth as much as $4 billion, while Angels and Rangers have already signed deals worth more than $1 billion each.

According to Forbes, the average Major League baseball team’s value rose 16 percent to an all-time high of $605 million in 2012. Revenue for the 30 teams was an average of $212 million in 2011. The Dodgers were sold for more than $2 billion. The Astros were sold for more than $135 million more than what Forbes had estimated the team’s estimated.

Even as the World Series ratings were down, ratings for many individual teams are up- and not just the big-market teams at er Louis Saha believes they should’ve pushed harder for Sporting CP ace Bruno Fernandes.Saha believes they should have done more than monitored the 24-year-old and show have signed him“Bruno Fernandes is a player of great technical quality who coulthe top of the standings. For instance, the lowly Royals, who finished 72-90, recorded their best ratings in history. And they’re not the only ones. Baseball is a regional sport, with fans supporting their team for 162 s on target for Brazil in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Senegal in Singapore. The Liverpool striker opened the scoring after just eight minutes when he latched onto a pass from Manchester City rival Gabriel Jesus before chipping the ball past Alfred Gomis games over the course of six months. That’s where the money — and the viewership — comes in.

And if you want to step away from TV money, attendance at Major League Baseball games is at its highest level since 2008. A total of 74.86 million fans went to big league parks this season.

So, yeah, the World Series isn’t the — and it will never be, because it’s not a fair comparison. Football is the country’s most popular sport and the Super Bowl is a singular event, the World Series is anything from four to seven games played over nine days. Few people can host seven parties over nine days. No, the media creation that is the Super Bowl, which is always held on a weekend, will get the ratings, even if people are more interested in the commercials than the game. The Super Bowl brings in nonsports fans, the World Series celebrates baseball fans.

The ratings are down, but the ratings are Fox’s problem. It would only be baseball’s problem if it was having trouble selling rights to the World Series — and with Fox just re-signing its contract, that doesn’t seem to be the case. It seems baseball’s doing just fine.

Andy Pettitte roughed up in Triple-A

starting pitcher Andy Pettitte made his first Triple-A start Sunday afternoon for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and it was not what one would call successful. Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys being sued by alleged victim in 2017 vehicle accident

There’s a new twist in the and story, but this one has nothing to do .

On January 11, 2017, the All-Pro running back was involved in a vehicle accident in Frisco, TX at the intersection of Dallas Parkway and Gaylord Parkway, not far from the team’s practice facility. Frisco Police described the incident as “minor” upon arriving on the scene, and Elliott immediately took to Twitter to declare he suffered no injuries in the accident.

“I’m good,” . “I’ve been in bigger collisions.”

That allegedly is not the case for the other driver though, who launched a lawsuit in August 2018 against Elliott — seeking $1 million in compensation due to “serious, life-altering injuries and damages”.

The plaintiff, Ronnie Hill, stated his vehicle was written off as a total loss following the deployment of both air bags once it was struck by Elliott’s vehicle. Texas law doesn’t allow for the suing of another driver’s insurance company, so it’s Elliott’s wallet Hill was instead going after at the time. Elliott’s lawyer, Frank Salzano, responded by citing the aforementioned Texas law as the plaintiff’s justification for listing Elliott on the lawsuit.

One year later, Hill is taking his allegations to new heights, and now accuses the Cowboys of colluding with Frisco police to cover up details of what he believes truly happened on that January afternoon — suing both Elliott and thethout each other.Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes have been excellent playing up front together this season.”A lot has been made of me playing two centre forwards, but I think centre forwards are the best players, in that it’s the hardest job, so if ther team for $20 million as recompense, according to legal documents obtained by .

“If anyone had actually reported the impact of the accident, and had Elliott been examined, he would have most likely been placed in concussion protocol and out for the Dallas Cowboys upcoming playoff game,” Hill alleges in his suit.

Elliott went on to play against the , rushing for 125 yards in a Cowboys loss, and there were no signs of injury or a concussion following the accident a few days prior.

The lawsuit comes with curious timing, considering Elliott and the Cowboys are currently engaged in talks on a contract extension as he remains absent from camp to help nudge the process along. The two-time rushing champ was also in the headlines in 2019 for an incident in Las Vegas that involved a security officer who claims Elliott pushed him into a metal railing, causing him to fall. The launched an investigation that included interviewing witnesses present at the time of the verbal altercation, and deemed there was no violation to thmidfielder is rated highly by coach Zinedine Zidane, but has been told there is no place for him in Real’s immediate plans.Brahim is yet to gArroyo has joined Liverpool’s first team for the start of preseason training. The Liverpool Echo says Arroyo is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool after joining from Fortaleza in his Colombian homeland in February 2018.While Liverpool supporters et on the pitch this season and he’s been told to find himself a loan club to step up his development. Both ine league’s personal conduct policy.

The alleged victim in that situation, Kyle Johnson, threatened to press charges if Elliott didn’t apologize. Despite having admitted to receiving one at the time and again seeing one from Elliott on social media, Johnson opted to press charges nonetheless — 55 days after the incident.

In return, Elliott and his reps are pressing charges of their own, accusing Johnson of extortion. Law enforcement has launched an investigation into both matters, and both are currently pending.

The latest lawsuit will ultimately add to those who view Elliott as a handful off-the-field, despite the progress he’s made in that arena — as also noted by Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones and commissioner Roger Goodell.

This time, the Cowboys themselves are involved, though, making things a bit messier as they talk numbers with their star RB.

Todd Gurley fallout: Here’s what the future holds for Rams and RB after ‘arthritic component’ to knee disclosed

Since the latter part of last season, health status has been a mystee Treble bonus to the tune of £15m.The Daily Mail says City’s stars collectively scooped upwards of £15million in bonuses for completing an unprecedented domestic Treble.Pep Guardiola became the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson in 2009 to win ry wrapped in a riddle. After averaging 98 yards per game through the ‘ first 12 contests, Gurley topped 50 yards just once in his final five games, including the playoffs.

The Rams have been vague about exactly what’s wrong, but the curtain was lifted this week when Gurley’s trainer told our Dave Richard that the All-Pro running back  and that “everybody knew” this would be the case when Gurley came out of Georgia, because of the surgery he’d had for a torn ACL.

So, the Rams have known this for years? Why have they kept it such a secret? And what does it mean for the future of the team and Gurley? Ryan Wilson, John Breech and Sean Wagner-McGough broke it all down on Tuesday’s edition of the Pick Six Podcast.

“Doesn’t all of this make the decision to give Gurley an extension less than a year ago all the more puzzling and perplexing?” Wagner-McGough asked. “I mean, you just mentioned his trainer saying everybody knew this was going to be a thing because he had ACL surgery in college, so why in the world are you giving him a four-year, $60M extension?”

Gurley got that four-year deal in July of 2018. He was taken by the Rams with the 10th pick of the 2015 draft, after undergoing surgery on his left knee the previous November.

“Even if he didn’t have that lingering knee issue coming into the , we’re always talking about how you shouldn’t give running backs big money, and then you add in the fact he had the knee problem,” Wagner-McGough said. “And the Rams can’t get out of the deal anytime soon. He’s got a dead cap of $35M so they can’t cut him this year, and they can’t cut him next year when he’s got a dead cap of $25M.

“Ryan mentioned he averaged 48 yards per game in his last five last season. If that’s the production they’re getting out of him the rest of his contract, that will go down as an all-time bad contract.”

Breech pointed to the cloud of secrecy in L.A. as another cause for concern.

“Here’s the thing: the Rams spent the entire offseason tiptoeing around the issue,” Breech said. “Les Snead, Sean McVay, they both got asked on the spot about arthritis and basically ducked the question. They’ve been playing it down.

“This is not making me feel any more comfortable about Gurley’s knee, and I was already uncomfortable with it.”

Theismann rips Kaepernick, wants NFL to make all players stand for national anthem

If had been teammates with Joe Theismann, it’s probably safe to say that the former quarterback would’ve never voted for Kaepernick to win any type of team award.

During an Tuesday, Theismann became the latest person to weigh in on the Kaepernick controversy. Over the course of the three-minute interview, Theismann managed to rip everyone from Kaepernick to the to commissioner Roger Goodell. Theismann also called for the to institute a rule that would require players to stand for the national anthem.

The former quarterback, who was on the Redskins team that won XVII, began the interview by saying that Kaepernick had no business .

The award, which is the most prestigious honor that the 49ers hand out each season, was voted on by San Francisco players and is given to the player who “best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont.”

Theismann couldn’t figure out why anyone in the 49ers locker room would consider Kaepernick “inspirational or courageous.”

“You’re a 2-14 football team, he’s won one football game. What has he inspired?” Theismann said. “Inspired and courageous? You’re 2-14. What did he inspire? He’s [1-10] as a quarterback [in 2016]. What [did] he possibly inspire?”

Kaepernick’s record on the field didn’t really have anything to do with him winning the award, as it was voted on by his teammates. The 49ers quarterback made the decision to protest racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem, and let’s just say, that doesn’t sit well with Theismann.

“I don’t agree with what he’s done,” Theismandy Gray rates Jack Grealish ahead of Liverpool pair Gini Wijnaldum and Naby Keita.Gray insists the Villa captain would get into Manchester City’s midfield and “walk into” Tottenham’s.”I know he’s a Villa fan, his family are all Villa fans, he loves nn said. “As a matter of fact, the American flag — and I wear one on my lapel very proudly no mattson ahead.Given how the team performed in the second half of the last campaign, following the arrival of Hasenhüttl in December, Le Tissier is excited about what could lie ahead in the coming 12 months.”I think I’m probably a lot more optimistic thaer where I go — it stands for the right to be able to do the things that you want to do, to be able to stand up and have a difference of opinion. I agree with that part of it, but not when you’re on the job.”

To keep a Kaepernick situation from happening again, the former Redskins quarterback wants to the NFL to implement a policy that would require all players to stand during the national anthem.

“I would like to see the National Football League finally stand up and take a stance and say, ‘As part of our new policy goingr United have drawn up a seven-player shopping list. The Red Devils are desperate for reinforcements having endured their worst start to a top-flight campaign in 30 years.ESPN says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and chief Ed Woodward have their eyes on forward, we’re going to adopt the same policy that the has, that you will stand for the national anthem,'” Theismann said.

However, the 66-year-old doesn’t see that policy ever being instituted because he doesn’t think NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the fortitude to make a decision like that.

“I think he’s been wishy-washy,” Theismann said. “I think you have to stand up and present it to the owners. I think that the National Football League has to take a stance.”

Goodell has gone Kaepernick’s right to protest, but he doesn’t like the fact that the 49ers quarterback kneels during the national anthem.

As for Theismann, who ripped RG3 in August for on his arm, he says Kaepernick should be welcome to protest, just not in the workplace.

“One of the issues I had a problem was that socks that he’s worn depicting a pig’s head with an officer’s hat on. Everyone has the right to express their opinion, but not in the workplace,” Theismann said.

Mike Tomlin invokes ‘Hollywood’ Henderson to perfectly troll Terry Bradshaw

Mike Tomlin may not be much of a coach, , but he has a career in comedy writing.

The coach met with the media on Tuesday, two days after beating the , 31-27, and securing the AFC North in the process, and he was finally asked about Bradshaw’s recent comments. The short version goes something like this: “.”

So what was Tomlin’s response?

“I appreciate the support, but criticism and critique are very much a part of our business and it’s an element of our business that, as a competitor, I embrace,” he said, via the ‘ Chris Bradford. “The term ‘great’ is something that I have a great deal of respect for. I certainly don’t think that my resume to this point reads as great but very few coaches’ resumes read that at this point.

“Guys like Bill (Belichick)d plans of signing Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann.Minguella ran for the Barcelona presidency in 2003.”I wouldn’t sign Griezmann for two reasons,” Minguella said.”Firstly, he has teased his club, agreed to move to Barcelona and, when the m in New England can probably say that, or (Greg Popovich) down in San Antonio, but I think the rest of us are just working stiffs, to be quite honest with you.

“Now that being said, terms like ‘cheerleader guy,’ to me, maybe fall outside the bounds of critique or criticism. They fall probably more into the area of disrespect and unprofessional. But what do I know? I grew up a Dallas fan, particularly a Hollywood Henderson fan.”

That was as thorough a burn as you’ll see.

For those not old enough to get the reference, Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson played for the from 1975-1979, and famously joked Before XIII against the Steelers that Bradshaw “couldn’t spell cat if you spotted him the c and the a.”

Bradshaw would finish 17 of 30 for 318 yards, with four touchdowns and an interception, and was named Super Bowl MVP in the Steelers’ 35-31 win.

But in the first half, with the Steelers leading 14-0, Henderson sacked Bradshaw as linebacker Mike Hegman stripped the quarterback and returned it for a touchdown.

On Friday, here’s what Bradshaw said during an appearance on FS1.

“I don’t think he’s a great coach at all. He’s a nice coach. He’s really a great cheerleader guy. I don’t know what he does, but I don’t think he’s a great coach at all. His name never even pops in my mind when we think about great coaches in the .”

The facts don’t align with Bradshaw’s opinion, and even less so now in the wake of the Steelers’ latest victory that pushed Tomlin’s career record to 102-57. Afterwards, Tomlin’s players were asked about their coach.

“No offense to Terry,” quarterback said, via . “I think he is one of the greatest of all time. I consider him Steeler family. But this is the real family, the tight-knit family that we have in here in this locker room. And when pas made its first major move into the Premier League through sponsorship deals with a swathe of top flight clubs, reports, /.Monster has so far been confirmed as the official energy drinks partner of Brighton, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City, eople talk, it’s dust in the wind, if you will.

“I laughed at it because, well, it was what it was. But we can’t dwell on it. Some people may have taken it to heart and said, ‘Hey we’re going to play for him because of what was said.’ I think I’ve been in this long enough and heard enough stuff that for me it wasn’t as big of a deal.”

Running back added: “I didn’t see it, but I heard about it. So for me it wasn’t a rallying cry. My mindset was to go out here and get the win regardless. I didn’t care what people were saying, but for him, for Coach T, obviously we want to win for that man. I love him to death. To me, he’s a great coach. He puts us in the right situations. He’s real savvy. He thinks a lot like me, and obviously I’m excited about the win.”

Meanwhile, Big Ben and Bradshaw have had issues too.’s John Breech .

“Our relationship is not any good,” Bradshaw said, . “When I told him to park the motorcycle, he got pissed. Alright?urs thrashed Palace 4-0 on Saturday.Hodgson said: “It’s one of those games that we will just have to write off and learn from and hold our hands up and admit we were beaten by a better team.”We came here hoping to play as well as they played and we w Then he had the accident. And since then, there’s, you know … he doesn’t like me, and I’m learning not to like him.”

After Roethlisberger , Bradshaw the Steelers should have cut the quarterback.

In 2012, Roethlisberger said , adding: “I’ve never had an issue [with him]. He said a bunch of things in the past about me; it hurts a little bit when you think about family, but I’ve never been one to say anything to him or at him.”

By 2014, Big Ben was asked if the thought Bradshaw would want him to get four Super Bowl rings.”I’m sure he wouldn’t want me to get four championships,” , “but if he’s a true Steeler at heart then he would want this organization to win as many championships as possible.”

But there is good news: While Bradshaw remains unimpressed with Tomlin, he’s apparently come around on Roethlisberger. Here’s what he told in September: “I would rate Ben right on top of the list [of the best NFL quarterbacks], ahead of [Tom] Brady for sure and anybody else, [Philip] Rivers, Eli [Manning]. He is big, strong and poised.”

Titans Notebook: Jake Locker changes protections like a veteran in win

For the second straight week, QB had a slow start. He sprayed balls behind, to the outside and out of the reach of his wide receivers at the beginning of Thursday night’s game against the — which the Titans ended up winning, 32-27.

Appearing in his first start since being named the Titans’ starting quarterback for the upcoming season, Locker opened 3 of 8 for 19 yards. His accuracy struggles were reminiscent of his performance last week vs. Tampa Bay, when he had a 0.0 rating late in the second quarter.

Locker then demonstrated why the Titans’ brass is ready for him to take command of the offense. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2011 completed 5 of his next 8 passes for 95 yards in orchestrating a 17-3 lead.

Two plays in particular exemplified Locker’s continued development. Operating from the shotgun on a third and 3 late in the first quarter, Locker looked off his first read to wide receiver and connected with on a pivot route along the right sidelines.
