My plea to mainstream on-base percentage instead of batting average

(US Presswire)

Earlier Friday, . Here’s what I had to say about on-base percentage:

“Unlike batting average, on-base percentage doesn’t ignore working the count to earn a walk, stepping into an inside pitch or being such a terrifying hitter that one gets pitched around and/or intentionally walked often. There are four players with more than 2,000 career walks: Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. And we’re supposed to ignore that and concentrate on batting average? In its purest form, OBP is basically measuring the amount of times a hitter does not make an out. With only 27 precious outs in a regulation game, this stat is paramount. That this isn’t mainstreamed as more important than batting average makes very little sense to me.”

I feel so strongly about this I’d like to elaborate.

Before I do, though, let me make one thing clear: Batting average is, and always will be, important. I’m not saying it’s not important and, in fact, I hate it when some sabermatricians act like stats that they don’t like aren’t even remotely useful. I’m simply saying on-base percentage is more important than average.

In a regulation, nine-inning game, each team has 27 outs within which to score the runs needed to win. If the home team leads through the top of the ninth, it only has 24 outs, but the point remains that outs are precious — that is, avoiding making outs is precious.

And if avoiding making outs is precious, wouldn’t the better rate-stat measure be the one that measures the amount of times a batter doesn’t make an out? I don’t see how anyone being honest with himself could come to any other logical conclusion.

And yet, since close to baseball’s inception, batting average has been hailed as more mainstream and more important than on-base percentage. Walks (and hit-by-pitches, for that matter) are ignored in batting average.

Say works a 12-pitch walk to load the bases, bringing to the plate. As far as OBP is concerned, Cabrera gets a score of 1.000 for the plate appearance. As far as batting average is concerned, Cabrera did nothing, quite literally. The plate appearance is ignored. It doesn’t count. His average is .—.

Putting aside the more substantive part of the plate appearance — getting on base with a walk — what about the toll that a 12-pitch plate appearance takes out of a pitcher, not to mention the high-stress pitches that are to follow against Fielder with the bases juiced? That greatly helped the team, and yet it’s totally ignored by the mainstream rate stat.

Now, we need to resist the urge to say something of a Neanderthal nature, such as “a real man would swing the bat and drive in the runs himself.” Not only does such macho chest-thumping reek of a prepubescent level of maturity, but it ignores, yes, batting average (see, I told you it was important). Cabrera led the AL with a .330 batting average in 2012. So if, in this scenario, Cabrera swings the bat like a manormer club AS Monaco on a season-long loan, Bakayoko has confirmed PSG have made attempts to sign him in the past.”A big club where I refused to sign? Paris,” he revealed to Canal+.The France international is set to cut ties with Chelsea after a diff, he has a 67 percent chance of making an out. In taking the walk, he made a dangerous situation even more dangerous for the pitcher.

Yet many broadcasts still show the standard line of batting average, home runs and RBI when a player comes to the plate. Tune into any radio show, and hear callers say something like “he’s a .260 hitter!” without any other context, as if batting average alone defines a player.

We received tons of comments and Twitter feedback the last few weeks about how “wilted” or “collapsed” down the stretch. You see, he hit .289 in September. Putting aside that this is far from a poor batting average, Trout had a .400 on-base percentage in September. That was higher than his .399 mark for the whole season. Not to mention that as a leadoff man, Trout’s job is clearly to get on base an excited to be moving to Real Madrid. The departing Santos star admits playing alongside Vinicius Junior is an ambition he’s long had.Rodrygo said, “Since I was little, when he played for Flamengo and I played for Santos, people dreamed that we could d score.

Here’s another example, in trivia form: Name the winners of each batting title. It’s pretty easy, right? The two MVPs, Miguel Cabrera and , were the batting champions.

Now name the two league leaders in OBP. I’ll wait while you look it up and then act as if you knew off the top of your head.

It was (.416) in the AL and * (.474) in the NL.

* Votto was 26 plate appearances short of qualifying to technically win the batting title or OBP title (if there were one, which I’d love!). But giving him an out for each of those PAs knocks him down to .449, easily taking the crown.

Votto had Posey by a .474-.408 edeld United owner Kevin McCabe has questioned new owner Prince Abdullah’s suitability to run the club, reports BBC Sport.McCabe was forced to sell his 50% stake in the Premier League side because of a high-court ruling, and says he regrets selling 50%ge in OBP, so he made an out roughly 6.6 percent fewer times per plate appearance than Posey did, but Posey is the “batting champion.” That makes no sense.

To reiterate, batting average is important, it’s just far less important than OBP. I like the triple-slash line, so you can see average, OBP and slugging percentage (power). My overall point here, though, is that the overwhelming majority of the time people choose just one of the rate stats, it’s batting average. Knowing everything I just wrote above, that simply defies all reason and logic.

I understand it’s tough to shake generations of tradition. Hell, I still remember my high school batting averages from my three years playing varsity and have no freaking clue what my OBPs were. Batting average is what we were all raised on, and I know it’ll be a tough habit to break. But we have to realize not all traditions are best. Lots of things have evolved in baseball over the years for the better. I believe this is one that should do so as well.

Maybe one day I’ll see OBP on my TV screen when a batter comes to the plate instead of batting average. Maybe the triple-slash line will take over. Either would be fine, but the days of displaying batting average alone need to go the way of the cookie-cutter stadiums from the 1970s.

Did Yankees suffer Curse of Cervelli in Games 1 and 2?

There is one obvious, logical explanation for why the started 0-2, and that is that they played an excellent team in the Tampa Bay Rays, and they were outplayed by the Rays. The other explanation is a bit more fanciful:ique Sanchez Flores insists he can still find a way to beat the drop after defeat at Southampton. The Hornets are now effectively seven points from safety due to their goal difference, but Sanchez Flores believes that he can still help the team going Could it be the Curse of Cervelli? The Yankees were only doing what they felt was prudent when they acquired backup catcher in a trade from the Giants on the cusp of the season. The move definitely gave them peace of mind. With prospect out indefinitely with a back injury, the Yankees restored their depth by obtaining Stewart to replace him.But Stewart didn’t exactly replace Romiseriously.Stephens believes it presents an opportunity for the club to continue their hot-streak.Speaking to the Daily Echo, he said: “It’s not my call and I don’t know if the gaffer will ask me, but I want to play every game.“I’m in a good momenne. Stewart was placed on the major-league roster, forcing , the primary backup the last three seasons, to the minors. The reason the Yankees demoted Cervelli and not Stewart was no fault of Cervelli. Everyone understands Cervelli is the better player, and should starter suffer an injury, presumably Cervelli would become the starter. Stewart would remain the backup. The reason stated for Cervelli and not Stewart going down is that Cervelli still had a minor-league option left while Stewart did not. The move came as a shock to Cervelli, who har has shut down talk of a return to Manchester United.Van der Sar has been linked with the planned technical director’s post at United. But he says: “No, I am focused on my work as general manager at Ajax.“We have done great in Europe last season aad done nothing to deserve a demotion. He was sent down because Romine got hurt, and the Yankees wanted to cover their bases. Cervelli was obviously shocked by the sudden demotion, and so was everyone else.Yankees GM Brian Cashman explained, “We feel Cervelli is a major-league backup, but now we’re back to where we were before the Romine injury, even though it’s not a good situation for Cervy to go to Triple-A. Organizationally, we’re in a good place.”This move will actually hurt the Yankees in the short term because Stewart, a career .200 hitter and defensive specialist, is not the all-around player Cervelli is. So to quell their concern about minor-league depth, they have taken a step backward on the major-league roster and needlessly punished Cervelli.

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens pick: How to watch, stream on CBS, CBS All Access

Week 4 promises that an important divisional rivalry will be renewed on Sunday, as the ell Mauro Icardi to Juventus this summer.Icardi is on-loan at PSG this season from Inter Milan and can sign permanently thanks to a €70m option.French media sources say PSG would be willing to sign the Argentina international outright and sell him and will square off for the first time in 2019, fighting for positioning within an AFC North long dominated by the .

Before we reveal why the Ravens are the safe bet to stay in first place, let’s get you some details on how and when to tune in:

How to watch

Sunday, Sept. 29 | 1 p.m. ETM&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore)CBS |

The Browns may have entered the 2019 season with more hype than any other team, and that was at least partially justified considering how explosive quarterback looked under coach Freddie Kitchens at the tail end of 2018. Early this year, however, Cleveland has been one of the least explosive “contenders” in the . The Browns defense has flashed playmaking ability, but Mayfield and Co., even with weaponry like Jr. and , have mightily struggled to do the same behind a weak O-line and spotty Kitchens play-calling. After falling big to the in Week 1, they got away with a slow start in a Week 2 win against the , then battled their way to the wire against the in Week 3.

The Ravens, meanwhile, have been nothing if not explosive. Most people figured Baltimore would at least be fast in 2019 after seeing how the coaching staff used QB upon his replacing of under center in 2018. But the Ravens have been far more than just fast so far. With a defense littered with veteran experience, such as that of safety , and an “O” led not only by Jackson’s legs — and those of — but by Jackson’s deep-ball launches to rookie burner . Baltimore stomped all over the hapless in Week 1, discarded of the in Week 2, then fought to the end in a close defeat in Week 3, when thub Brugge are expected to complete the signing of Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama today. The Kenya international has seen the two clubs agree a fee of €13m.Wanyama, 28, was open to moving to AC Milan, but with the Italians looking elsewhere, he’ey were up against maybe the only team more explosive than them, the .

Everyone’s still waiting for the Browns to come to life, and as long as Mayfield is under center, you have to believe they can do better. But until Kitchens proves he’s capable of managing both the team and the offensive play calls (or, better yet, until the Browns prove capable of giving Mayfield time to throw), it’s tough to believe they have a sustainable enough attack to go blow for blow with a fireworks show like Baltimore. This is a divisional matchup, which means a lot of factors can be thrown out the window. And yet, at home, with a close defeat to a contender still fresh in their minds, the Ravens seem awfully primed for a statement win against theier United boss Jose Mourinho has again set out what he’s seeking in his next job.Mourinho has been linked with the Arsenal job in recent weeks as pressure mounts on Unai Emery. Mourinho told The Coaches’ Voice: “The only thing that I know is what I dr rivals.

Packers running back challenges Bears defense: ‘Nobody is scared, everybody is mortal’

The and are set to meet for the 199th time this Thursday night, as if the ‘s two oldest franchises needed even more ammunition for the first game of the league’s 100th season. Leaveerton fullback Jonjoe Kenny has enjoyed his first month with Schalke. The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes as David Wagner’s side cruised to a 5-0 win over SV Drochtersen/Assel in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.”I like the way we play a lot, I it to Packers running back to add some fireworks to what already will be an entertaining kickoff game.

Williams and the Packers running backs will be tested against the Bears’ run defense, which finished No. 1 in the NFC last year. The Packers had just 157 rushing yards in two games against the Bears last year, which doesn’t bother Williams in the slightest.

“They’re a good defense, but nobody is scared,” Williamof Jamaica internationally.Having recently penned a new five-year deal at Goodison Park, Holgate is now eyeing an England call-up to complete the jigsaw, despite being eligible for Jamaica.“My grandma and grandad are Jamaican, so it would be nice fs said, . “Everybody bleeds red. Everybody is mortal. We’re going to play our game. We’re going to play Packers football.”

Williams started the season opener against the Bears in 2018, and had 15 carries for 47 yards (3.13 yards per carry). He was the backup running back to in the Packers’s second game against the Bears, when he had 12 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. In two NFL seasons, Williams has 1,020 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, averaee to help improve their record in the market. The Sun says the idea has been discussed at Carrington, with former title-winner Darren Fletcher present at the meeting.Fletcher, 35, is expected to head up a team who will be charged with finding playersging 3.7 yards per carry.

Williams is expected to be the No. 2 running back to Aaron Jones heading into Thursday’s opener. Jones finished with 728 yards and eight touchdowns, leading the NFL with 5.5 yards per carry.

The statements Williams made towards the Bears defense were bold, but Green Bay did lead the NFL in rushing yards per carry (5.0) last year. With a new head coach in Matt LaFleur and a healthy , the Packers are displaying confidence heading into the season.

The Bears, however, may have some ideas of how to turn that confidence down a notch.

The Bills are playing musical chairs with their running backs from week to week in the preseason

and wilhas not featured in Lampard’s squad for the opening two Premier League fixtures but the Chelsea boss insists the Belgium striker has a role to play. The 25-year-old played for the under-23s in midweek and Lampard admits he provides needed competitionl alternate roles during the ‘ first two preseason games. McCoy, Buffalo’s starting running back, will be Thursday night against the , according to ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques.

Gore, the Bills’ 36-year-old running back, will be kept up of Buffalo’s second against the . McCoy will be given the night off. Like most teams, the Bills are trying to give their veteran players as much rest as possible during the preseason while also limiting the risk of injuries.

While they have the oldest running back duo in the , the Bills also possess two of the league’s most accomplished backs. McCoy, who celebrated his 31st birthday earlier this summer, is a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. The NFL’s rushing champion in 2013, McCoy is 25th all-time with 10,606 career rushing yards. He is looking to after rushing for a career-low 514 yards in 2018.

“I’m the guy. I feel like that. That’s what I’ve been told,” McCoy recently told the team’s website when asked about his role in the Bills’ offense in 2019. “That’s my everyday approach. We’re all a team and trying to help each other out to win games, compete against each other and make each other better. Me and Frank have been competing for years. We train in the offseason and we’re always trying to beat each other. I’m excited for the challenge.”

Gore, a future Hall of Famer, is currently fourth all-time with 14,748 career rushing yards. He is just 522 yards away from passing Barry Sanders for third on the all-time rushing list.

A member of the University of Miami’s 2001 national championship team, Gore is a five-time Pro Bowl who has rushed for over 1,000 yards on nine different occasions. Gore was one of the main players on San Francisco’s 2012 NFC championship team. Last season (his only season with the n’t rule out leaving Barcelona this summer.Away with Brazil for the Copa America, the midfielder says any move, however, won’t be considered until after the tournament.Coutinho said, “Many things that come out are not true. “I am totally focused on t), Gore rushed for 722 yards while averaging 4.6 yards per carry, his best average in six years.

Buffalo will need a healthy backfield if they are going to return to the playoffs for the second time in three years. While they still have one of the league’s top defenses, the Bills will once again turn to quarterback to lead Buffalo’s offense. Allen, the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft, went 5-6 in his first 11 career starts while throwing more interceptions (12) than tohead of accepting an offer from Boca Juniors. The striker joined Napoli as a free agent after being allowed to come off contract at Tottenham over the summer. After featuring in Napoli’s 1-1 draw at Champions League rivals Liverpool last night, Llorentuchdown passes (10).

Kareem Hunt contract details revealed: Browns might not even have to pay him $1 million in 2019

The ‘ decision to sign this week might be a PR risk, but the team definitely didn’t risk anything financially when they signed the former .

Not only did the Browns get Hunt to sign a one-year deal , but the contract also includes a roster bonus for every game during the regular season that he’s active, which m refused to rule out moving for Barcelona star Lionel Messi.Europe’s biggest clubs have been encouraged in their interest for the Argentine great after his public clash with Barca football chief Eric Abidal last week. Before yesterday’s derby win overeans, if Hunt gets suspended, he won’t be seeing much money in 2019.

According , the contract is worth a total of $1.1 million; however, it’s not going to be easy for Hunt to collect all of that. The biggest part of Hunt’s contract is his base salary, which will pay him a total of $645,000 in 2019. The running back will also get paid a $25,000 bonus for every game that he’s on the Browns’ active roster. Hunt can also collect another $55,000 if he meets the criteria for his offseason workout bonus.

Of course, the only way that Hunt can earn all that money is if he’s active all 16 games in 2019, which isn’t a given. The former Chiefs running back has been since December after a video was released that during an altercation that took place at Cleveland hotel in February 2018. The placed him on the commissioner’s exempt list shortly after it has been revealed. The Daily Mail says Allegri asked Arsenal chiefs why he should become their new manager. It was deemed he was ‘arrogant’, although those feelings may well have changed by now.Arsenal have drawn up a managerial shortlist followingthe video surfaced, and that’s where he’s been ever since.

If the league decides to suspended Hunt for just four games in 2019, that means he would lose out on a total of $62,941 per week ($37,941 in base salary and $25,000 for his active roster bonus) for a total loss of $251,764. If that were to happen, Hunt’s contract in 2019 would be worth just $848,236. If the suspension were to go on for six games, Hunt would lose out on nearly $380,000.

Although Hunt won’t be making much with the Browns, the money he’ll be making in Cleveland will actually be a raise over what he would have made with the Chiefs. As a third-round pick in the 2017 , Hunt would have only made a maximum of $678,750 if the Chiefs had .

The Browns might not be taking a financial risk with Hunt, but there is some risk associated with signing him and general manager John Dorsey definitely realizes that. Dorsey, who drafted Hunt back in 2017 while both men were in Kansas City, told as a way to give him a second chance.

“I think we’re all appalled by it,” Dorsey said of Hunt’s actions. “But after doing extensive research, analyzing the situation, we came to the conclusion that I’m willing to help a man from a second chance moving forward to be a better person. My faith tells me that.”

Dorsey also noted that the team did its due diligence on Hunt before giving him the one-year deal.

“We’ve done our extensive research,” Dorsey said. “He’s extremely remorseful for that. I’ve always believed that if a person wants to better themselves and be a better person, I’m willing to give them a chance. I truly believe he’ll be a better man today than he was yesterday.”

The upside for the Browns is that if Hunt has a breakout season, he’ll be a restricted free agent in 2020, which will make it easier for Cleveland to kem Hotspur. The Portuguese was overjoyed upon his announcement as the club’s new manager, replacing Mauricio Pochettino.”I couldn’t be happier and look forward to the challenge,” Mourinho said.”What can I promise? Passion, real passion. Passion for my ep him. On the other hand, if Hunt struggles on the field or struggles to stay out of trouble, the Browns can dump him without taking a financial hit thanks to the way his deal is structured.

Jim Schwartz strongly denies that he’s trying to usurp Eagles’ Doug Pederson

Don’t call Jim Schwartz a usurper just yet. On Tuesday, the defensive coordinator and former head coach of the made it clear that , despite what was reported by Philly.com.

“I’ll say this,” Schwartz told reporters on Tuesday, per NJ.com. “And I’ll say this unequivocally: I am very comfortable with my relati defender Benoit Badiashile is set to sign a new contract with the club. The 18-year-old has played two times in Ligue 1 for Monaco this term. His impressive performances have led to interest from high profile clubs such as Chelsea. However, he is commionship with Doug Pederson. I know he’s comfortable in his relationship with me. What I do here is, I work extremely hard to execute the defense the way that he has outlined it for me. OK? I’m very comfortable with that. Not everybody is privy to those instructions.

“If anybody misunderstands or misinterprets any actions, just know this: Coach Pederson is aware of everything that I do in this building and outside of the building.”

Schwartz then provided an example of how loyal he is to Pederson.

“This just happened about a half hour agoBurnley boss Sean Dyche doesn’t expect a big spending January. The Clarets are again being linked with Derby right-back Jayden Bogle but the Burnley boss has moved to underline the restraints he is working underHe told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: “It’s irrelevant whether it changes or not,” he said. “The club are only ever going to spend so much money, probably not that much, so therefore it’s irrelevant.“I could ask Santa for a list as long as my body of players, it’s highly unlikely I’ll get too many of them.“It’s not me having a go, it’s just the reality. If you look at our windows previously in January I don’t think you’re going to find there is massive amounts of activity and certainly not for massive fees.”,” Schwartz said. “Coach Pederson has a rule in the cafeteria that you can’t wear tank tops or no sleeves. He wasn’t in the cafeteria when I was. There was an offensive player that had no sleeves on, so I taelieves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can build his team around Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann.Pogba is reportedly keen to join Real Madrid, while his France teammate Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he wants to leave, with Barcelona as the likely destinapped him and said, ‘You’ve got to get out. You’ve got to get sleeves on.’

“I know that when I was head coach, I wanted people around the building that were enforcing my rules. I did that for him. I respect that position. I’m going to execute the job the way that he outlined it for me. I think anything else, we can’t really worry about.”

Before we move on, let’s just acknowledge how weird of a rule that is. Pederson doesn’t allow sleeveless shirts in the cafeteria? Does he think biceps are a “distraction” to the team? Or is this a food safety issue? All I’m saying is that Bill Belichick and his have been pretty darn successful in his reign.

OK, back to the main story. On Saturday, a day before Schwartz’s defense walloped the , Philly.com’s Jeff McLane reported that some members of the Eagles’ organization believe

One Eagles staffer said the only coach who probably doesn’t think Schwartz is trying to undercut Pederson is Pederson. Three players, who requested anonymity, said that it has become well-known in the locker room that Schwartz is waiting to usurp power.

“He walks around the building like he thinks he’s the head coach,” one player said.

As previously noted, Schwartz does have plenty of head coaching experience. From 2009-13, he coached the Lions to a 29-51 record and guided them into the playoffs once. He’s also seen plenty of success as a defensive coordinator. He got the Detroit job after leading the ‘ defense to consecutive top-10 seasons as the defensive coordinator and as the ‘ defensive coordinator in 2014, Buffalo finished fourth in both points and yards allowed. Last year, the Eagles ranked in the top half of the league in both categories.

So, it won’t be surprising to see Schwartz, 51, get another head coaching opportunity at some point. Whether that happens in Philadelphia remains to be seen. But it is worth noting that the Eagles invested substantially in quarterback  and it’s Pederson — not Schwartz — who is the offensive-minded coach.
