He’s obviously not still alive; Graham died in 1965 at the age of 87, but he lived quite the life. Scott Rolen sounds like he’s going to retire

content_img

(US Presswire)

CINCINNATI — As reporters huddled around ’s locker in the clubhouse one last time in 2012, there was a sense — even if Rolen didn’t come out and say it — that it would be the last time for the 37-year-old third baseman.

Rolen, a free agent after the World Series, sounded as if he had made up his mind on his future. A 17-year veteran and winner of eight Gold Gloves, as well as the 1997 NL Rookie of the Year, Rolen can be content with an exceptional career, despite striking out to end Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, ending the Reds season and likely his career.

“I don’t know what I’m doing, I’ll probably go home and pitch some balls (to my son) and he’s going to be acting like he was in the same situation I was just in, that’s the situation you want to be in, no question,” Rolen said. “He’s going to grow up and be in that spot some day and dad was in that spot. I’m thankful and happy to be in that spot, and to have that opportunity. It obviously didn’t go the way I wanted it to. That’s where I want to be.”

A TV reporter then said he wouldn’t ask if Rolen had made a decision about retirement, and Rolen responded, “You just did.”

And while the question may not have been direct, and Rolen’s answer wasn’t any more so, the intent and the answer were both clear.

Rolen was then asked if he had “anything left in the tank?”

“Is there anything left in the tank? Like another game? I don’t know,” Rolen said. “I’m going to go home and be a dad and move forward a little bit right now and see what happens.”

Soon, some sort of announcement will ls have offered the German to clubs across Europe. But Ozil told Adidas in a video which continued the launch of Arsenal’s new kit: “I’ve played for so many clubs already who all have their own fanbase but what I appreciate about Arsenal, and I’ve beikely be made. It’s a big week for debuts, and that doesn’t even include the possibility that the call up Anthony Rizzo on Tuesday, as some have speculated. The Diamondbacks swept the Cubs over the weekend to move to within 5 1/2 games of the Dodgers, the closest they’ve been since the first week of May.The Diamondbacks still haven’t said for sure that Bauer is starting on Thursday, but there’s plenty of evidence, and also The Diamondbacks need a starter to take the spot vacated when Joe Saunders was hurt, and they pulled Bauer after 2 2/3 innings on Sunday to set him up for the Wednesday game in Atlanta.Bauer has star potential, beyond just his ability on the mound ().But it’s hard to know if any rookie pitcher can impact the National League West race — just as it’s hard to know if Youkilis and Utley can put the White Sox and Phillies into the playoffs. The Youkilis deal made perfect sense for the White Sox, whose third baseman have had by far the worst offensive production in baseball. And while Youkilis wasn’t doing all that well with the Red Sox, there’s at least a chance that he’ll benefit from a move to a team that absolutely needs him and wants him.The White Sox moved back into first place in the American League Central on Sunday, so it would be silly to ask if they have a chance to win it. Of course they do.At the same time, the Sox are about to enter a difficult stretch of their schedule. Already, the computers at coolstandings have reduced their chance at the playoffs to 7.6 percent (barely better than the ).Some will say that Utley, with his questionable knees, isn’t good enough anymore to make a difference. But his knees weren’t good last year, either, and his presence in the lineup was enough for the Phillies to go 66-37 in the games he played. If the Phillies were to win at that rate for the rest of this season, they’d end up with 97 wins.Is that realistic? It almost certainly isn’t, but it’s very realistic to think that Utley could make a difference. On to 3 to Watch: Here’s a White Sox question that could be more important than whether Youkilis will help them: Will stay healthy? He can be a dominating pitcher when he does, and his 2.74 ERA this year (and a 1.91 mark this month) show it. Peavy will be the starter in Youkilis’ debut, in starts for the Twins, who will wonder if his improved results (2.67 ERA in five starts since reentering the starting rotation) will cause someone to want to trade for him. Utley will join Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, and he could then make his big-league season debut in If so, it’ll be a challenging first day back, with (2.19 ERA, .195 opponents batting average) starting for the Pirates. If there’s a concern about Bauer, it’s that his walk totals in the minor leagues have been high. So maybe it’ll help him to debut against an aggressive Atlanta team, in It’s an interesting game for the Braves, too, because they’ll see if can repeat his strong performance last Friday in Boston, in what was his first game back from the minor leagues.

Former Redskins head coach Jay Gruden breaks silence after being fired: ‘I’m not bitter’

content_img

The finally made the decision on Monday, after the team lost their first five games of the 2019 season. It was a move that many saw coming, including Gruden himself.

Gruden had been with the franchise for a little more than five full seasons and accumulated a 35-49-1 record. The lone playoff appearance in 2015 seems like ages ago, as the Redskins followed that with three consecutive third-place finishes in the NFC East.

On Monday afternoon, Gruden spoke with The Washington Post about as the coach of the Redskins.

Gruden received a text at about 8 p.m. ET on Sunday alerting him about a 5 a.m. meeting with owner Daniel Snyder. Gruden knew what would happen during this meeting, so he went ahead and drove to the Redskins’ facility in Ashburn, Virginia, around midnight. He packed up his office, took a nap, took a shower and then met with Snyder and team president Bruce Allen before dawn to receive his walking papers.

“I’m not bitter,” Gruden told The Washington Post. “This is a production-based business, and I didn’t get it done.”

There were concerns that Gruden had already mentally checked out during the past couple of weeks, and was one of the national media members who was quick to callas part of Quique Sanchez Flores’ backroom staff. The Spanish coach is replacing Javi Gracia, who was sacked after the Hornets languish at tharren Bent wants his old club to sign Alfredo Morelos from Rangers. The Colombian forward has risen to prominence in the past 12 months, after some stunning form in the Scottish Premiership. He has continued his golden spell this term, as he has 22 goae bottom of the Premier League table.Sanchez has previous experience managing Watford, but he will be hoping t him out.

“I want to make sure that everybody knows that I actually did work,” Gruden said on Monday afternoon.

A lot has happened in just the past year. Halfway through the 2018 season, the Redskins appeared to be in the driver’s seat of the division. Multiple injuries eventually derailed the season, as Washington finished with a 7-9 record for the second successive season.

With the amount of injuries and the questionable amount of power Snyder and Allen held, who knows if Gruden really did get a fair shake inoi is targeting a playing return next month. The winger, 19, has targeted the away match at West Ham on April 5 for his return, but he is taking his recovery from a nagging hamstring injury carefully, says The Sun.The England man aggravated the proble Washington? Considered a players’ coach, he was well respected by his fellow coaches and his players. Washington’s problems appear to go much higher than just the head coach.

The Redskins have a good chance to earn their first victory of the post-Gruden era — and of the 2019 season — this Sunday, when they visit the winless .

Raiders look crisp without Antonio Brown in Week 1, have their way in victory over Broncos

No ? No problem.

You could also take that literally, considering all the 31-year-old brought to the in his short stay was problem after problem . The team gave up a third- and fifth-round pick in March to alleviate the of the All-Pro’s antics, but found themselves in over their head as they tried to navigate through helmet grievances and frostbitten feet that led to Brown missing the majority of training camp. With those issues finally behind them, the Raiders looked forward to having Brown back on the field and participating like any other player on the roster, but they discovered — yet again — that .

Following an altercation with general manager Mike Mayock , which led to a 48-hour whirlwind of events, the volatile wide receiver demanded his release via social media and was subsequently granted it only two days before the Raiders were to host the ; with Brown immediately heading east to join the New England Patriots.

With Brown jettisoned, many questioned what quarterback and Co. would look like sans the No. 1 receiver, but it turns out that — at least for Week 1 — you can’t miss what you never had.

Carr came out of the gates firing against the Broncos, and never looked back. Without a true star wideout to key in on, he split the majority of his targets between wide receiver and tight end , and to stupendoine from US President Donald Trump to deny rumours he wants to join Newcastle United. The Liverpool legend has been linked with the vacant managerial post at St. James’ Park. But Gerrard has categorically denied his interest in the role.”Fake news. A quarterback-hungry defense left just as starved as when they arrived, landing no sacks or QB hits whatsoever against Carr, and he had his way with his merry band of outcasts and young, hungry talent.

How Brown’s absence plays out in the long run is anyone’s guess but, at least for one night, his services were not needed.

In the end, business was definitely booming in Oakland on Monday Night Football, and everyone wore the correct helmet.

2019 NFL Draft: What should the Giants do with their two first-round picks after trading Odell Beckham to Browns?

content_img

The may have signed Jr. to a (including a $21 million signing bonus) just before the 2018 season, and general manager Dave Gettleman may have insisted repeatedly in recent weeks that he wouldn’t trade one of the league’s best players. But on Tuesday night to the in exchange for Cleveland’s 2019 first and third-round picks (Nos. 17 and 95) and 2017 first-round pick safety .

It’s hard to come away from this thinking anything other than the Browns and while the Giants appear to have no idea what they’re doing. A year ago, some three months before Beckham’s extension, Gettleman passed on a franchise quarterback with the second-overall pick in the 2018 and took running back , who was electric last season … all while New York limped to a 1-7 start and a 5-11 finish.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old remains the starter. The good news is that the Giants now have two first-round picks (No. 6 and No. 17) as well as pick No. 37. The bad news is that they have needs up and down the roster and three new faces won’t magically change the perception that they’re one of the ‘s worst teams heading into next season.

But perception isn’t reality and a lot can change between March and September. So which players should the Giants target early in next month’s draft to get back on track? Let’s take a look.

Scenario 1: Take a quarterback first, then a pass rusher

This was priority No. 1 long before Beckham was traded; Manning and you’d have to go back to 2015 to find the last time he was just . But the Giants passed on a year ago and now, with the sixth-overall pick, there is speculation they could again target a position other than quarterback.

That seems … foolish. Dwayne Haskins is the best passer in this draft class and he could be on the board when the Giants are on the clock with the No. 6 selection. Take him. Don’t think about it, just write his name on the card, submit it, and let Roger Goodell do the rest. Haskins is a traditional pocket passer who doesn’t offer the dynamism of Kyler Murray but would fit into the offense Pat Shurmur currently runs with Manning.

More than that, it would signal that the Giants understand Manning needs to call it a career already. And then, with the No. 17 pick, New York could address it’s other gaping need: pass rusher. Clelin Ferrell and Jachai Polite could be available, but with now in Cleveland (!), finding someone to replace him becomes almost as important as identifying Manning’s successor.

Scenario 2: on in Australasia. The summer signing from Crystal Palace was blown away by the club’s world-wide support. He told the club’s website: “I was told what would happen, but I didn’t know it was going to be that big. As soon as we landed, the fans were waiTake an pass rusher first, then a quarterback

Here’s the thing: The Giants realls and they have been unsuccessful in their search thus far.Names such as Chris Hughton and Lee Bowyer are being linked to the club.According to Sky Sports, West Brom want Northern Ireland boss O’Neill to take the job.He has already met with the club’y need a quarterback. We’ve all known that for a few years now. The problem, however, is that the 2019 class isn’t that deep. There’s also this:

The pass rushers are a different story — seven could go in the first round. Unfortunately, many of them could be off the board by the time New York is on the clock with its No. 17 pick. Put another way: They may need to target a pass rusher at No. 6. Nick Bosa and will be off the board but Montez Sweat, who had a great season and an even better Senior Bowl and combine, could be available. The same holds for Rashan Gary, one of the best athletes in this draft class, and Brian Burns, who reminds us on the field of .

Then, 11 picks later, the Giants can get their franchise quarterback. The most obvious choice: Daniel Jones. He looks like a Manning, partly because of the similar build but mostly because he played for David Cutcliffe at Duke. Cutcliffe is close with Peyton and Eli and when you watch Jones he does many of the same things that made the Mannings so successful. The issue — and this is what are desperately trying to determine — is whether Jones’ bad plays were a function of playing behind a suspect offensive line and with less-than-elite receivers, or is this who Jones is? Complicating matters: While drafting a quarterback makes sense, the Giants just got rid of their best player. Speaking of which …

Scenario 3: Get a wide receiver

This wasn’t a need 24 hours ago but now the depth chart looks like this: , , , , . So … yeah. There’s not a wideout worth the No. 6 pick, but if the Giants aren’t all in on a quarterback they could try to trade down and stockpile more picks. D.K. Metcalf is the most explosive wideout in this draft but he played just seven games last season because of a neck injury and he ran a limited route tree at Ole Miss. He’s not someone you’d want to throw out there and expect immediate production, especially on a team that looks worse on paper than it did three months ago. Hakeem Butler, the 6-5 physical freak out of Iowa State makes more sense, especially as a mid-round pick, and the same holds for Kelvin Harmon, whose slow 40 time at the combine (4.60) will likely affect his draft stock even though he’s one of the best overall pass catchers in this class.

Scenario 4: Get crazy and trade up for Kyler Murray

The Giants have the No. 6, No. 17 and No. 35 picks. If they really want to mix things up they could probably package those selections to move up to No. 1 and they could draft … Kyler Murray. It won’t happen — Murray doesn’t seem like a Gettleman guy in that he’s not a traditional pocket passer like Haskins or Jones — but we’ll repeat what we’ve been saying since there were murmurs that Murray might choose the NFL over Major Lllardyce has hit out at Steve Bruce’s critics.Bruce has been heavily criticised just seven games into his first season at the club, but Allardyce is having none of it.”Steve will be sleeping very restlessly at the moment,” he told talkSPORT.“It is eague Baseball: Imagine a Giants offense with Murray, Saquon Barkley, and Odell Beckham Jr. You think that group would put up more points than one led by Manning?

Of course it would! That math changes now that Beckham has been traded but the overall point remains: Murray could be a generational talent and it’s at least worth considering what it would mean to bring him to New York — look no further than Cleveland to see what taking did for that organization (also worth noting: the Browns had stocked the roster with young players and stockpiled picks to fill in the holes).

Giants fans can dream. At the end of the day, it seems eminently more likely that New York will take a pass rusher and a wide receiver with its two first-rounders, consider Jones with the 35th pick, and pray that a slightly improved offensive line and one more year of Eli can save them from another five-win season. Worst case: at least the Giants will be perfectly positioned to make a run at Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert a year from now.

Agent’s Take: 10 players under contract who could be in different uniforms next season

An offseason roster purge is an annual occurrence with NFL teams. Players are released and occasionally traded primarily when salaries aren’t deemed to match production.

A majority of the time when a player is traded or released, there is a residual cap charge, commonly referred to as dead money. It exists because the remaining proration of the salary components that are treated like signing bonus immediately accelerate into his team’s current salary cap with a trade or release. Dead money is typically a sunk cost where money isn’t owed to a player. Only if there are salary guarantees when a player is released will there be a payment associated with dead money.

There are two major exceptions to this general rule of bonus proration accelerating. Only the current year’s proration counts toward the cap with players released or traded after June 1. The bonus proration in future contract years is delayed until the next league year beginning in the following March. A team can also release two players each league year prior to June 1 (known as a post-June 1 designation) that will be treated under the cap as if they were released after June 1. With a post-June 1 designation, a team is required to carry the player’s full cap number until June 2, even though he is no longer a part of the roster. The player’s salary comes off the books at that time, unless it is guaranteed.

Here’s a look at 10 noteworthy players who could be in different uniforms next season, mostly because of their contracts.

The trading Brown seemed inevitable when team president Art Rooney II recently said it was “hard to envision” the seven-time Pro Bowler returning next season. Brown going AWOL after a practice incident with quarterback in the days leading up to the regular-season finale against the prompted head coach Mike Tomlin to bench him even though the game had playoff implications. Rooney appeared to have softened his stance earlier this week in a conference call with Steelers fans. A trade would likely occur before the fifth day of the upcoming league year (March 17) when Brown is due a $2.5 million roster bonus. The trading period resumes on March 13, the first day of the 2019 league year.

general manager Dave Gettleman was unwilling to commit to Manning remaining as starting quarterback for 2019 during his season-ending press conference. Manning is entering the final year of a four-year, $84 million contract extension signed in 2015. The 38 year old can’t be dealt to another team — in the unlikely event that the Giants could find a taker — without his permission. Manning has a no-trade clause in his contract, which he has been unwilling to waive so far. A decision about Manning will come quickly because of a $5 million fifth-day-of-the-league-year roster bonus due next March 17. Regardless of the decision with Manning, the Giants are expected to use the sixth-overall pick in the 2019 draft to select a quarterback.

The going all-in on after an unexpected playoff run to the AFC Championship Game last season proved to be a big mistake. Bortles was given a two-year, $34.497 million extension (worth up to another $12.5 million through salary escalators and incentives) with $26.5 million fully guaranteed, instead of allowing him to play the 2018 season on his $19.053 million fifth-year option. He took such a step backwards after being an effective game manager in 2017 that he was benched for four games in early December for , who didn’t fare any better, until the regular season finale. Since the guarantee has an offset, Jacksonville could recoup the entire $6.5 million (and the cap space) if Bortles makes at least that amount next season from another team. The Jaguars are expected look for a veteran to start at quarterback next season, either through a trade or in free agency.

Jets coach done talking about Fitzpatrick, sort of issues a deadline for his return

Perpetual free agent is on the verge of giving away the starting job he only earned due to a locker-room punch. Well, at least that’s what head coach Todd Bowles is saying.

On Wednesday, Bowles issued a deadline for Fitzpatrick to re-join the Jets and remain the starting quarterback. The only problem: his deadline was kind of vague. It even included the phrase, “You have time until you don’t have time,” which probably has Harvard man Fitzpatrick in a tizzy as he tries to unscramble Bowles’ message.

“There comes a point, but we’re not at that point yet,” Bowles said,”If it’s Week 4 in training camp and he’s not here, you know who your starter is going to be Week 1.”

“It’s to the extreme, but there’s a ticking clock,” he added, before issuing the vaguest warning ever. “You have time until you don’t have time.”

OK, there’s one more problem: Bowles said on Thursday that he’s done talking about Fitzpatrick. And that means we might never know when exactly Fitzpatrick won’t have time left until Fitzpatrick actually doesn’t have time left.

“With all due respect, I’m through tae Belgium fullback has declared he expects to leave this summer – and L’Equipe says PSG management have now obliged by naming their price to sell.PSG are seeking €25m for Meunier, with Manchester United and Everton keen.Just recently, Meunier, who lking about Fitz. I’m going to worry about the guys I have on the team,” Bowles said, via Jets PR. “I think I’ve expressed and said everything about the quarterbacks that I’m going to say at this standpoint. And until I get to training camp and see what happens, I’m pretty much done talking about it.”

Clearly, Bowles doesn’t understand how the offseason works. What are we supposed to write about if we can’t write about a 33-debut for victory at Wolves.Klopp has outlined how thrilled he was with the first Premier League showing of January signing Minamino, following the 25-year-old’s substitute appearance against Wolves.Speaking during his FA Cup press conference on Fridyear-old journeyman quarterback who’s failed to lure a team into signing him by wearing the disguise of his slightly-better-than-mediocre ayden admits Newcastle United players are expecting big things from Andy Carroll. The Geordie centre-forward made his first start in the top-flight for eight years in a Toon shirt and played a huge part in the victory against Sheffield United.United a2015 season?

Anyway, since this might be the last time we’ll hear Fitzpatrick’s name on Bowles’ lips until the end of July, allow me to express on my true feelings regarding Fitzpatrick. Oh wait, I already did that,

Ryan Fitzpatrick is not the Jets’ quarterback cure. He’s not their short-term plug for next season and he’s not their long-term savior for the years beyond. Ryan Fitzpatrick is still Ryan Fitzpatrick, the antithesis of dependable, a synonym for inconsistent.

So now that we’re officially done chatting about Fitzpatrick until he latches onto a team, let’s examine the Jets’ current quarterback group as if Fitzpatrick no longer exists. Though the team invested a second-round pick in , who’s shockingly experiencing accuracy issues thus far, it figures to start Smith instead.

Smith, if you recall, entered training camp last year as the starter and when punched him in the jaw. In his three-year career, Smith’s thrown eight more interceptions than touchdowns and has posted a 72.3 passer rating. That’s not ideal and might be one reason why so many Jets players Fitzpatrick.

Behind him is , who’s done absolutely nothing in the league as the Jets’ fourth-round pick of 2015. And stationed behind Petty is Hackenberg, whose offseason has gone a little like this:

Clearly, the situation is bleak. And if that scares the Jets, then they should probably read Joel Corry’s

But really, the Jets are handling this situation perfectly. Fitzpatrick has no leverage because nobody in the entire really wants to pay him millions of dollars, and his only other options would be to sit out the season (which won’t happen because he’s already 33) or hope some team experiences a rash of quarterback injuries at some point in the season. Now, Bowles is imposing a deadline — albeit, a vague one — to add some more pressure.

The Jets, on the other hand, were totally comfortable starting Smith a season ago. His broken jaw shouldn’t change how they feel about him. Just because Fitzpatrick is a slightly better quarterback than Smith, doesn’t mean the Jets should overpay for Fitzpatrick’s services.
